threat?? help please :(
« on: December 08, 2010, 05:41:02 pm »
on the top of the screen there is a threat meter (or whatever it is called) if you move your mouse over it it will say # of ships that will soon be attacking your planets... what is the easiest way of seeing what/where those planets are? is there a way to make threat a drop down menu? or is there a more efficient way of finding those planets that i don't know about... as right now it is really annoying to pause the game for a few mins, mouse over all my planets to find the ones under the threat tab... I am 15 hrs into my first game (120 planet map) and I am doing ok, but this aspect seems clunky... Am i missing something?

Until about 2 weeks ago you couldn't even get that list by mousing over the number :)

I'm planning to add a galaxy display filter for threat on each planet, but have lots of stuff I need to do right now.

Keith: you're talking about the attack numbers, but MayA was talking about threat.  For attack numbers, those can be validly seen by the player, but for threat that's something that is not known to the human players because the AI is out in the fog of war somewhere unknown.

MayA: the only way to see the information you're talking about is to wait for them to attack you, or to put scouts on the AI planets near your own, and eyeball it.  Given that these are hidden troop movements of the AI, you can't find out what they do until they tip their hand.  Your best bet is often to make sure that you have reasonably few ingress points, so you don't have so much uncovered flanks.

But, just having a mark I scout sitting on each AI world adjacent to yours can also give you a visual indicator of where ships are moving around, as when those numbers start counting up and you have high threat, you know that at least SOME of the AI ships are there.

i don't think you understand my question... I'll try to explain :)

suppose threat says 1000
i move my mouse over the number
it will give a breakdown:

soon-to-be-attacking enemy ships that are currently not on your team's planets

sip - 300
anke 400
cenrex 300

so what is the easiest way to find sip, anke and cenrex?

I understand why the threat number doesn't always add up to the total (say in the above example threat said 2500 but still gave the same break down (so the total of known ships would still be 1000 with the fog of war accomodating for the other 2500

No, I'm talking about threat; load up a save with active threat and mouseover the threat number.  It only shows breakdowns for planets that the humans have scout intel on (which includes command stations, obviously); as you said the humans don't know anything about the other planets.

Didn't realize you needed scout intel - i saw it, but hadn't realized it was because of my obsessive scout-dropping ;)

You want to find the planets more easily if I get you right, I had the same issue before I found this solution:
Press 'Esc' -> Settings ->Inteface tab -> Enable : 'Allways show planet names in galaxy map'.
Maybe there is a command to temporarily show the planet names, but non that I'm aware of, maybe someone else knows ;)

Oh yeah, I forgot about that option; I always have it enabled.

In SlimDX, I used to hold the Alt key to toggle showing names, but I don't think that works anymore.

Now it's Ctrl or Shift, I forget which one.  Should have mentioned that, myself!

We should make one of those huge posters with a big list of key combos and important facts and such, like so: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/lisa/archive/2010/04/16/vs-2010-keyboard-shortcut-posters-now-available-for-vb-c-f-c.aspx
