AI War review on Eurogamer

I bought the game on the basis of this review as soon as I saw there was a OSX version on Steam

Now I have loaded it up I am completely lost. Is there a n00b guide I should start with?

Play through the tutorials for sure. That should get you most of the basics. The wiki which is linked at the top of every forum page also has a ton of info to get you going. Then as  you go forwards and find things that confuse you, just ask all your other questions on the forums and we will all give you conflicting answers.

Well, there's:
1) The in-game tutorial.  Playing through that until you no longer feel lost (or finish it) is highly encouraged
2) There's the wiki (http://arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=AI_War:Fleet_Command ), I suggest the articles "I'm Just Starting Out -- What Should I Do?" and "Fast Facts: A Crash Course On AI War", though they may be somewhat not up-to-date with recent changes.
3) There's these forums, where you can ask questions and either get answers or be pointed in the direction of wiki articles or whatever where you can find those answers.
