Thoughts on speed of combat in 4.0
« on: November 06, 2010, 05:57:28 am »
I was wondering if anybody else found combat to be a little too fast in 4.0 when using the 'normal' speed setting? Between the 2x movespeed of human units (I really dont like this, it was a novelty when using logistic stations and now it just feels like a huge advantage that I dont appreciate) and the much higher DPS of units, every unit and structure can be killed within a second by a moderate blob of 200+

this translates to attacking an AI world essentally being a que of attack orders on each gaurdpost & gaurdian, each of which instantly evaporates when my ships pass- they dont even have to slow down- and this is only a small group!

waves are often defeated within 20 seconds of their arrival and combats between individual units even are blurringly fast. the extremely fast movespeed of friendly units means that queing orders to pass through multiple systems is difficult because by the time you have qued 1 or 2 systems, the ships have left the system and must be reselected.

human MK 1 FF go down instantly to midsized bomber waves, literally in one salvo. AI FF take a small fraction of the time to destroy as they did in 3.0.

I know if I dont like it I just just play on 4x mode  ;D just wondered how you guys felt about it

I must agree with Superking. And I can say that even on 4X, combat is blitzing fast. Waves in particular.

I haven't had a problem with this. I think a lot of things depend on the capacity of your ships/combat settings. On the settings I play at, if the AI had any further buffing to most of the structures, my fleets would be quite decimated.

You could change to 4x, or,up the difficulty of the AI . The difficulty of the game shouldn't be  completely judged by how fast you can kill a structure, but by the consequences of the decision itself. Upping the difficulty level can help you with that.

I am trying to get used to Normal Speed / Caps. I am just getting accustomed to the faster movement speed, but ships definitely seem less hardy. I'm not used to losing ships so fast.

Being a long time fan of slow-paced strategy games, I also at first felt the speed was too fast even on Epic, but I think I've gotten used to the speed by now, and find it suitable for my playstyle.

I don't think it would hurt anyone to have another step slower option for those who really like to watch their fleets march on and micro every single ship according to situation. ;p That'd be too slow for me, but if it'd make someone's gameplay happier... good for them, right? ;)

I personally like the new speed at which everything happens.  Previously, I felt that the gameplay was a bit slow and drawn-out, even on the old "Fast and Furious" setting.  On normal, I don't feel that anything happens faster than I can understand what's going on, which I suppose is the point of the pace of the game (in my opinion).

I've made peace with the speed increases on Epic, but they're just this side of too fast. I'd certainly never think about playing the game on normal, let alone something faster.

I always use Epic speed, but I think the combat is ok for the most part. Perhaps about 10% slower would be ok.

However, for me powerful space ships sould blow each up quckly ^^

I didn't notice it defaults to Normal when generating a new game & thought v4 was a fair bit easier than v3 (I assumed Epic would be the default since it's the equivalent of v3 normal). Epic seems to be OK but I haven't played long enough to know for sure as I only started it earlier today after updating to v4.029 & have been stopping to do things like bug-report.

i play on normal and love it.

I do use pause constantly though.. I just prefer to make my decisions at my pace (like in a TBS which is what i usually play) and not have to wait ages for things to happen/ships to move

Have you used the minus speed setting

-6  == 11% game speed on my machine
-2     == 50% game speed

AI war got the option to control your game to alsmot what degree you would want. Gotta like that :)

I just happen to be a huge "Epic strategy game" fan, but I have been toying with normal unit caps (tho never lower speed then epic), and even at lower ship caps the game is still pretty good ;).

Heck, less blobbing occurs in my games with "normal" ship caps and I find myself thinking a bit moe about some tactics.
