The reason I picked 30k radar dampening was as Hearteater said explictly:

It is meant to allow all but sniper type shots to continue as normal. It prevents the player from being able to pop them while sitting at the wormhole but in return it prevents ai waves from popping forts because the logic loves to send alpha strikes to a single target, so with larger waves you start having a random chance for forts to simply be annihilated.
Life is short. Have fun.

Just wanted to mention player Fortesses out range the 30k radar dampening, so this change benefits them much more than AI Forts.

Grav turrets + Logistics + Fortress + radar-dampening = Fortress commanders laughing as they play a game of "space plane"? ;)

Yep, though in general if your whipping boy is set up like that, the fortresses dont usually go down even without radar dampening, unless you're completely overwhelmed.

Still a good change though.  :)

I thought this, then I got the AI to use sentinel frigates in a 3 hw game.

Ouch!

Is there any reason not to change auto-kiting so that non-sniper units automatically move in range to shoot targets with radar dampening?

I believe I did so when I fixed the general bug with kiting (including raptor/bombard/etc intrinsic kiting) interacting with radar dampening.

If not, and someone can point me to a save where a ship is trying to kite from outside their effective range, I can give it a look :)

I saw in the latest list of potential changes there was nothing on forts.

Are you still trying to figure them out?

That's on my todo list :)  It's just adding a line of code, though.
