some kind of 'hardcore mode'
« on: March 07, 2012, 05:56:59 pm »
ok, this may sound a bit silly, as this game is more hardcore than any other i know. what i'm trying to get at is some form of aesthetics which i find really pleasing in computer games. in that i mean i hate nothing more than the possibility of saving, failing, reloading.. you know what i mean. that's why i love games like chess or worms or stuff like that. your sense are sharper, the thrill is better and  it adds a lot of a sense of reality to a game. so, i wondered if it is possible to make it so that only one save exists at the time, and that save being always the momentary one, with no chance of going back or even get tempted to do so.  now, i have no idea how to do it in ai war. i just play games, i have no technical interest in it, i don't know how things work from a technical point of view, i only want them to work. haha. i'm well aware it's probably not possible.. but i thought maybe i'd mention it.

ps: i still really love the game and appreciate all the support for it.

Looks like we have +1 vote for 'I have no willpower' mode... :)

New challenge?  AI 10/10 Core/Raid Engine 1 homeworld Crosshatch map Hardcore Mode?
... and then we'll have cake.

Alpha Centauri had "Ironman Mode" Which only saved when you exited. That is what you are looking for right?

it may or may not surprise you, but you're not the first one with this idea =) people have been talking about a so called "permadeath" mode. There's already a post on mantis, our bugtracker. This is the link to the topic:

hehe, yeah.. i think BobTheJanitor pretty much had the same thought. and.. i know this is kind of impossible in a game like AI war to pull off elegantly. so, the willpower mode is probably your best bet. it's just..  aaaaaaahh.. SO TEMPTING!! but then, when I'm 5 hours into a game, and somehow mess up, then i'm gonna re-load and from that moment on it's just not the same again, because it feels like cheating.

normally I would agree with you. But this game is so complex and sometimes there are so many things happening at once, that it is sometimes hard to keep track of everything and then mistakes are made. There is no shame in "savescumming". I too would like a permadeath option, but just for the extra thrill it would give. I savescum if I feel like it and other times I just live with the mistakes I make.

I was planning to do a double Raid engine on crosshatch someday. 7/7 though, not 10/10. I want to have at least a small chance of survival :P

One of my shortest games on record was a spoke map where the AI's sentinel frigates and tachyon guardians stopped my scouts cold...  moving into the spoke planet and having 4 raid engine 3+ trigger, at about 20 minutes in quickly provided opportunities to select a new set of game options.

I played last my 3 games without save/load. Two I have won, one lost. Just do your save on exit. Really I can not understand why developers need spent their time on mode which already implemented in game. The game I lost lasted for 17 hours and was the most fun of them. Nenzul rocket destroying a fabricator under shields. A Golem destroying my advancved factory. My sense are sharper, the thrill is better and  and I have a lot of a sense of reality. BTW how do you go to play coop multiplayer? I do not think people  save/load there becouse of someone mistake. There is only one person that stand before you and hardcore mode. That is all depends on you.

Maybe in order to make the purpose of the mode clearer we should call it "Weenie Mode: I am so weak I need the game to forcibly prevent me from savescumming".  It might not feel as good enabling it, but at least we'd have fewer discussions along the lines of "this is already implemented" :)
