A few questions regarding achievements
« on: November 22, 2010, 12:58:07 pm »
Recently got back to playing your game and managed to get three of my friends interested in it and we now have regular 4 player games going.
We are all quite addicted to achievements and has set a goal to reach somewhere between 90-100% of the achievement in the game with our group games as a long time goal which is something that should keep us busy for months to come.

Some questions came up as we started playing regarding the achievements and would be quite nice to get some answers:
  • In-game vs Steam
The in-game screen shows 202 achievements while Steam only shows 178 achievements with the two released expansions installed and I can not see any achievements tied to Children of Neinzul (these are only shown in-game). Are they going to be added as Steam Achievements or have you missed adding them? Or is it Valve to blame for them not showing?
  • The future
Will the new expansion, Light of the Spire, have achievements? Already know I am going to buy it as I love the game (and will do what I can to support you guys as developers) but would be nice to know if its going to have achievements or not as it matters to some of my friends and add a lot of added incentive to keep playing the game.
  • Solo
Is there any achievement that you can not get in a co-op game? We plan to stick to our 4 player group for the entire span of the game so would be nice if everything was possible to get as a team. If it is you are by far the most co-op friendly developer out there :D
  • Cheats
Does using cheats invalidate achievements and if they do; Do all of them invalidate them or only specific ones? Reason I am wondering is that it would be quite interesting to just play with some different builds to see what works before heading into a difficult scenario and using some cheats to quickly boost your resources to try the build/strategy/ship(s) out would be quite nice but if they trigger achievements it could get things a bit easier (and cheaper) then actually playing properly to get them.

Hoping you can help me/us clear some things up. Thanks again for a great game and insane amounts of support for it.

Good questions!  The answers:

1. Yes, we haven't gotten around to adding the CoN achievements to Steam yet.  That's our thing, not theirs, but we'll get it on there in December when we do the LotS ones.

2. Yes, LotS will have achievements.

3. Of course, you can get all the achievements in co-op!  We wouldn't do it any other way, you should never have to play solo for any reason if you don't want to. :)

4. Yes, using any cheat disables winning any achievements in that campaign.  Having cheats enabled does not, but using a cheat does.

Thanks for your insanely quick reply. I am rather sure that you are a bot ;) Loving the answers as well. We will stick to the main game and the Zenith Remnant until the release of the next expansion in that case but think we will have no problems keeping ourselves busy till then.

If you wanted to play with CoN and were concerned about achievements, you could always save right before a victory and simply replay the last few minutes of that game when the CoN achievements are added.

Actually, when you have local achievements, they get synced to Steam next time you start.  So you don't even have to do any later syncing, which is nice.

My pleasure!

Along similar lines, steam achievements are a bit out of date with the current version. I filed a bug report for steam using 600k as the resource cap, but it sounds like this is a bit more general and will get fixed soon, as mentioned above. That said, the numbers in front of the achievements have always confused me, since they don't seem to refer to which tier of an achievement set a given achievement is on...
