Ship Stats: Snipers
« on: September 13, 2009, 12:08:14 am »
I currently don't use snipers at all--they are ridiculously weak and won't take out a thing even in numbers. The best it might be able to do is wipe out like one of those microfighters or something, which is why i don't build them. Sure they can fire across a planet, but i just don't use them. Making them more powerful up to several thousand damage, but increase cost buildtime and shot delay might work.

I found them very useful in situations where I had a fleet going through enemy territory gathering knowledge. When I came across planets with specific units I wanted destroyed (like data centers), I simply set my snipers loose on them, avoiding ship casualties because I didn't need to fight my way over to whatever I wanted dead. In numbers, they're great at taking out specific distant units (such as warp gates and (if you're feeling brave) command stations).

There are definitely ships in the game which can seem useless, but actually work really well for more specific things or in conjunction with other ships. It can be frustrating to have them in situations where they aren't very good, but in some cases they can be a real lifesaver. :)

Snipers can be used to great effect in defense of planets, just make sure that they're well defended as they obviously can't stand up on their own in close range combat. They can also be useful at beach heads on AI Planets, again as long as the beach head is well defended.

And you should deploy them in a huge horde: ALL Is, IIs, IIIs and IVs firing in unison do some damage.

It is not in my top 5 of specials though...
