The Cool and The Ugly
« on: July 21, 2012, 05:15:55 pm »
So what's with some of the new planets? What if someone bought the game few days ago and this was the first thing that person saw.

I took screen shots of some good looking planets and some bad looking planets

Cool planets are cool. Ugly planets are ugly. The screen shots speak for themselves. Some of the planets in the ugly album would be good if they weren't so bright.

Also I've not seen anyone talk about this. Not complaining or saying this will be fixed. That worries me. Are people really ok with how the planets look? I don't think they should have been released in their current state.

It has actually been mentioned, just has to wait for Chris to get back into the office next week. (He's out this week.)

It has something to do with the Alpha settings on the nebulas as I understand it.

I used to have marbles as a kid... I gave them away when I left the house last week, and look, here they are!

If only one of those planets were transparent with coloured stripes streaming through the centre. :P

Anyway - how do they look with the new desat? I'm occupied with RL and other stuff atm and don't have the leisure of seeing them in-game.

Some of the ones you think are ugly I actually like, like this one and this one Turning down the saturation might make the others look better.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

cool and ugly planets is just a matter of opinion really. It's not something I would care to much about as a new player.

I think it's just a matter of taste as well.  I think both of them look pretty good as well.  Some of the planets look a little strange, but I like the variety and they stand out a lot more than they did before.

Yeah I think it might be worth a review when there's time; the fried egg one you got on your start menu screen is a shocker (to me at least).  But the first one dlcooper picked out I agree is cool.  Anyway I don't feel like X needs any help with those decisions but I'd favor his doing a pass; minimal as it is AI War does have a very cool atmosphere and I remember the whole cold-vastness-of-space thing pulling me in quite a lot when I first fired up the game.

I think those 2 are the best in the ugly album. But they're planets not stars. So they wouldn't have to be so shiny compared to the background.

Edit: What do you think about the other ones? The rotting cow and the Cardboard planets for example.

Oh and that "nebula slider" is perfect! Good job with that.

its all a matter of opinion. and nobody said every planet has to look pretty. mercury is a planet and it isn't exactly planet of the year.

I quite like rotting cow and cardboard planet, actually.  I guess I really just have beef with the fried egg.

There was nothing wrong with the old backgrounds and planets.

I trust that this will be taken care of after next week, but in the meantime, you can always turn planets off, or replace the planet sprites' files that you don't like with the ones that you do.

Just a wild guess, are the hue shifts being reduced appropriately in intensity when the nebula intensity goes down as well?
