But, it works for Steam with ingame chat and everything, why would I want to use XFire?  ;)

I find steam to be a heavier resource than xfire - I also prefer the simplicity of xfire to steam and it's presentation. Steam I don't have on auto startup whereas I do xfire.

More importantly: Why would I want anyone to know anything about what I'm doing at any time, let alone during my recreational time?
They see the game and it spreads it, they see you're playing it and start a convo about it, etc etc.

I've bought a number of games because I signed into steam, saw a bunch of my friends playing it, and asked them about it.

Most of my friends are also security conscious and don't put any personal information on the Internet except on encrypted, password-protected, personally-owned and operated servers with strong security measures... So this wouldn't help me. LOL

I wouldn't mind seeing what E-Eraser's playing though, he seems to have good taste.

Okay, looks like XFire support is coming!  Just got this email back from them:

Quote
Dear Chris,

Thank you for the email and interest in Xfire.  We have just purchased a copy of AI War: Fleet Command, and we will try to support this game as soon as we can J.  If there are any further questions, I will be sure to email you.

Thanks!

Doesn't she get a cookie for going the extra mile!  I really never expected them to buy the game in order to add support, I just asked about alternate methods to their C-based hooks (which, incidentally, thanks to darke's notes about SWIG might have been doable anyway -- and I have a lot of background in doing P/Invoke and COM Interop, anyway, but the problem is that then their dlls have to be precompiled and there are some fun challenges with data transformations... but now this is really getting off topic).

Anyway, I was really surprised by this sort of response, I'm really impressed with them already.

I suggest you offer them a few (1-3?) free keys to raffle off to their players for going the extra mile?

I haven't used XFire in quite some time, so it may have changed over the last two years, but every time I was running them both, XFire strangely was consuming more memory than Steam, and it would leak on occasion. Plus, I hate having ads in my buddy list.

At one point it had a leak but no longer. If you asked me what it's current ad was I couldn't tell you if that helps :) It is easily the best gaming messenger - no question. For steam to show you need to add in in as an application and run it through steam and if you're lucky your pc won't crash when you chat through it.

I add EVERYTHING I own to Steam and it's never crashed ever.

I rarely add games to it - why would I need to with xfire ;) Both platforms are good if it promotes AI Wars :)

Actually, one of the main reasons I stopped using Fire is because it doesn't support a lot of the stuff I play, so I figured, if it doesn't work, why use it? :)

I think they're pretty good and as can be seen from Chris's response they're very receptive - even buying a copy of his game. Very nice

Regardless of whether you have xfire or not I would still suggest posting to that thread - mainly it will keep it in the top of the xfire games section, by itself that will have people interested and the xfire community is fairly big.

Of course secondary motive is the devs will be more encouraged to add the support :)

EDIT:  Actually, I moved the original contents of this to it's own thread, XFire Support Is A Go (Mostly)!

Well Admiral  ;D

To be honest, atm i playing nothing at all, except maybe Fallout 3 with a lot of mods and all DLC.. i somehow never got to it, but that phase is over too now.. reached level 30 - and like in WoW when i max a game out (found a lot of stuff i missed first time around ,p) i loose interest (which is why i want a statistics/rank gaining system in Ai war...)

Atm i am more or less bored braindeath with games, except ai war but atm i am waiting for 1.20 to be released so that i can start playing a long 80 planet campaign without changing variables for once ;p

Truth be told, i was already tempted to write a better backstory to AI War in english/german because it seems nobody had the time yet to write more than 5 short sentences (i am talking about that scrolling in-game-menu text thingy) - Aside that, i am just enjoying the summer i guess... doing as few things as possible.

Ah well... Can't really decide what to play and don't have any inspiration atm to do any art.. so chilling time ;p

I was playing lots of games and now I only play AI War :) I do need to play some other but at the moment it's too much fun in AI Wars.
