I have a similar problem (meaning I always get my butt kicked by carrier waves later in game).

I understand the approach to keep AIP low, but I find it difficult to stick to it - especially as taking an Advanced Factory, Advanced Research Facility, etc. not only requires you to take the respective planet, but also to provide a supply line leading to the system to be able to take it...

I beginning to think that the bonus that the AI gets to reinforcements over AIP and/or per alerted planets, and/or the cutoff to border aggression to start happening needs to be toned down some.

In my game, at a "mere" 220 AIP, just four more planets being alerted (previously, it was only 3, then it became 7 when I tried to start setting up a satellite world) caused a near non-stop stream of freed defenders (due to border aggression and excess defenders going into carriers). Something seems off about that.

Anyone else have similar experiences or opinions?

Difficulty level?  Whether it's too much depends on the difficulty level at hand.

Difficulty 8, which is why I solicited feedback. I would be interesting to see if someone can see this sort of behavior with difficulty 7 or something.

However, this sort of difference in response (reinforcements happening at a only somewhat fast rate to a rate that is constantly triggering border aggression and carrier spawning to hold excess defenders) with just +30 AIP more and 4 more alerted planets seems a bit extreme for difficulty 8.

Is it possible the non-stop stream of defenders wasn't actually caused by your planet capture, but that the alerted planets just happened to "fill up" at around the same time?  I'd have thought putting additional planets on alert should reduce the number of re-inforcements at each planet, although taking one more planet means one additional planet can be reinforced per pulse.

Also, neutering?

Diff 7, I thought there was a lot of build up, but it was honestly expected to me.  I let them build up, and let them build up over a period of time.  If it's not knocked down, it all starts filling carriers left and right.

Imo, seems like the pressure of the game, versus anything that's out of the ordinary.

But I'll get back to you as I play this game; started a 8/8 w/ Spire and Heroics.

What AI types were you seeing this behaviour with? I'm pretty sure they don't all reinforce at the same rate.

a non stop stream of defenders at 8/8? I didn't even see a non stop stream of defenders in my 9/9 crosshatch game. Yeah it was hard, but not impossibly so. What AI types and such do you play with? I imagine Special Forces Captain could cause a non stop stream of defenders now.

No I personally don't think it need to be toned down a bit. When it comes to wave numbers and defensive strength/reinforcements, a 7/7 game isn't all that challenging really.

Not true.

That was already addressed in the thread that quote was from.



Anyways, one of the AIs was a special forces captain, BUT, the special forces captain only gets a bonus to special forces, which is not subject to border aggression, which is what I was seeing.

I notice that once you get the AIP up a few hundred you'll start getting carriers spawning on coreworlds regardless of their alert status. In my current game I'm having a fair bit of trouble moving offensively just because of that.
