No foul, both AIW and that game in that link got the image from a free source of images :)

Not enough ships there to really benefit from the attack power boost.

Daniel Cook is the artist, and the original game to use those images was Tyrian, way back in 1991.  I grew up playing that game. :)

I'll take a stab and guess you have Open Tyrian installed on your hard drive then? :D

Actually, no, I have the original Tyrian in my closet somewhere.  I originally bought it on 3.5" disk, and it's still on that.  Not that I have a disk drive of that sort handy at the moment, either, but I probably do somewhere.  I still have a couple of boxes of stuff on that format as well as 5.25" (including the first games I ever wrote, in QBASIC, on the latter).  And including all the Demon Stalker levels I did, on the former.

Think the disks are still readable?  I have a bunch of old stuff like that that I've been meaning to check on for the past several years but never remember about when I have a bunch of free time, and I'm sure some of it's dead by now.  I'm sure all my VIC-20 tapes have been unusable for years, and it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of my old floppies were heading that way, too.  I've been careful about transferring everything that's already been copied to a hard drive at some point to every new computer I get, just in case, but one of these days I have to see if the rest is salvageable.  Probably easier and more reliable to get the games themselves off abandonware sites at this point and just hope for the best with personal files.

Last time I checked was about 9 years ago, and they were just fine then. I have a mistrust of tape, having seen so many go bad, but I've had floppies that had intact data after 20+ years. No idea if these will turn out to have been that reliable. To be honest, I'm not too worried if I lose that data; it has some sentimental value, but that's it. The physical disks themselves are as much a remover as anything else. I guess it would be interesting to see what my earliest level designs look like after 18ish years, though. I bet I have disks with some FRUA quests I did, too. And I bet they are really bad. :)

Yeah, that's mostly why I'd want to look at my old stuff again.  I'm sure a lot of what I thought was awesome at the time and took me three weeks to come up with is actually terrible in hindsight and could be improved in 20 minutes, but occasionally some of it is funny or interesting.  There were a handful of things I actually was sort of pleased with myself for that are still entertaining after all this time, like managing to mostly recreate Rise of The Triad's drunk missiles in Marathon using the physics editor...which for some reason I combined into a single mod that also changed the player character into a Volkswagen Golf.  I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time for some reason.

I wish I had an archive like that.  I have a close family member who's a bit of a hoarder so I'm practically a man without a past, having disposed of so much stuff.  I'm relentless about clearing out anything that doesn't seem relevant when I stumble across it.

did anyone else find it annoying how with your choice of start weapons in the first levels of Tyrian SP, the best option is always pulse cannon/sonic waves? I try to give the vuclan, multicannon & proton a chance but they are terribad  :-[

also: that special where you can unlock the 8-way microbomb launcher wingmen on like 2nd level  :P

No reason they wouldn't be. I'm picking up an Amiga in the near future, and I've used old floppies recently that worked (Friend of mine got a C64, we were coding on it :P)

Ah.  I see you haven't met my arch-nemesis, entropy.  They definitely hold up better than tapes, but they still have a finite lifespan.
