[SteamOS] 64 Bit Build?

So I decided to install and have a play with SteamOS today and upon launching AI War was greeted with the option to launch in 64 bit mode... have my "out of memory" prayers been answered or is it just a quirk of the OS? Not seen any patch notes referencing this? Although to be fair I have been off the scene in a while!
