Steam Leaderboards
« on: March 02, 2010, 01:39:00 am »
It would seem that someone has hacked the steam leaderboards with a score of 2 billion... (unless it's actually possible to get that much)

If we weren't going for your money, you wouldn't have gotten as much value for it!

Oh, wait... *causation loop detonates*

Most likely they really got that score by doing something odd.  I highly doubt it was hacked, but I have no doubt that they had to do something to jimmy the score algorithm to make that happen...  (Basically figuring out what makes for a high score, and then figuring out a sort of exploitative way to then maximize it using that knowledge).

They also have every achievement in like 60 hours of game time... not sure that's possible. :P

Oh, looks like someone was editing their save files, then. There's nothing to stop people from doing that. If you want to cheat like crazy you can by editing save files; only way to prevent that would be some sort of central server thing, but that's bad for a whole lot of reasons. So, in the end, all this guy has shown is that he is a cheater, not that he is good. So, yeah... not much I can do about it. Another price of being drm-free.

On the plus side, it's about impossible to cheat during a running multiplayer game of ai war, same as with all rts games. You alter stuff on the fly, you get a desync immediately. Not that ai war is competitive in that way, anyway.

Ok :)

I was just hoping that as creator of AI war that Valve would give you the power to Reach into the screen and tear the score off the boards ;)

I can clear the entire scoreboard, or programmtatically I can have ai war itself delete it's own scores. But there's not a simple way to go about administratively removing just one score. And nothing to prevent him from just putting it back. That's why they have the vac bans, but I don't see banning someone over something this stupid. It's likely just some kid who things he is being clever instead of being a jerk.

This.

I never really got how cheating can be fun. I mean, if I know I had to cheat for a result I would not be happy about the result myself.

Aslo, I never relly looked at these scorebords, never knew they existed :)

That guy's score has been there since nearly the beginning. I just assumed he edited his save file. I don't really see the point in doing that though, it's just an arbitrary number on a community page for a video game. It accomplishes nothing, lol
