OK, GUYS, PLEASE LISTEN FOR A SECOND.

We KNOW that we can copy AI War to a flash drive. We know we could use an external file syncer to keep the saves.

Despite all this, we still want Steam Cloud.

Why?

I want to run my game through Steam, and I don't want to run yet another background process.

Please shut up and let us ask for this feature.

The text under your avatar may need changing ;)

In general steam-cloud is less viable the larger the save files in question.  AIW saves are often in the 1MB to 2MB range.  I don't know how that compares to other steam-cloud games.  Any ideas?

If that's what it does then hell no. Then we wouldn't be able to share save files on the forum.

Steam cloud integration doesn't in any way prevent us from doing local saves too.

Correct. For at least all of the games with Steam cloud integration I have had, the primary storage is still the hard-drive, but then the program can "tell" steam what needs to be copied to "the cloud" (presumably, the save game files).

But the cloud is the backup location, not the primary location.

Yea, for one thing the steam cloud frequently fails to sync.  At least in my case.  If that were even the primary mode of persistence (much less the sole one) it would be a disaster.

The frequent hiccups are one reason I haven't exactly hopped to get it in Arcen games, though perhaps the service is more reliable for others than it is for me.

It's always worked for me.

Skyrim has Steam Cloud, and it's saves START at 5mb and just get bigger.

So it should be fine.

The point of how Steam Cloud is typically used is to take the save that's already on your hard drive, and sync it with Steam. If you go play somewhere else, Steam pulls it back down for you. If it's already on your hard drive, it doesn't.

Not having a local version means if Steam is down or you're offline the game wouldn't be able to load saves at all, and that'd be silly. I think Civ 5 tried to do it that way for cloud saves, but Borderlands 2 just uses sticks its existing save there whenever you exit the game, and thus the game is portable without having to remember to stick the saves on a drive first.

I'm pretty sure Civ 5 lets you save locally now as I played a bunch for the first time the other day without internet connection and had no trouble.

As for the Cloud vs. copying folder argument, Cloud is just much easier.  My wife has a 13 inch macbook and I'm about to get a 10 inch tablet running win 8 with a keyboard dock and I can already tell you the 13 incher is too small to get much mileage out of an AI War game, but when I'm at my computer playing and the wife says come to bed it would be nice to just pick up the laptop and be able to play on it for just a little bit without having to think about it in advance or do any work to prepare it.

At least with torchlight if there is a difference in saves steam asks which version you want to sync, hard drive or cloud. The result is that if the cloud go downs ir the player goes offline saves are fi.e, but the plater gets to update their cloud whenever they get back on. seems overall the best solution.
Life is short. Have fun.
