What to do if a spire plot mission is failed?

Hi. I have recently played a game where a second shard was found and attempted to transport it back to my homeworld.
However my plans failed and the shard was destroyed. After this point there didn't seem to be any more messages from the spire.
Is this normal? It would be nice to be able to locate another shard in a new system or even just be informed if I have failed the spire plot.

Since it's technically a 'minor' faction, I'm guessing if you fail then you just go on to play the game normally and try to take out the AI homeworlds. Hope you have a save from before this if you still want to play the whole thing, otherwise it looks like a restart is going to be the only option.

Shame though because surely if they have found two shards they can find more. Either way if the spire plot missions are terminated by a failiure it would be nice to have a small journal message informing you, just to explain why you cannot progress with the spire in a plot like fashion. At the moment it seems like they simply stop being a part of the game for no good reason.

Yea, that's it; sorry, been meaning to add the journal message to that effect, just very busy right now.  The solution is to either continue to play the game normally or to load a previous save and not lose the shard this time
