Spirecraft Attritioner
« on: October 09, 2011, 08:55:22 pm »
So, does anyone who didn't like these (the spirecraft ones, the AI ones are a separate subject) before like them now?  Does anyone who liked them before not like them now?  Did everyone just ditch them when they started dividing by zero?

Only started playing LotS in the 5.018 patch so can't tell.  I think I'll warm to them, although I shunted what I had into the defense fleet when they started dividing by zero, and am currently leaving them there... :P

Trying out the Ion crafts instead - separate topic, but their FRD behaviour seems to be a little patchy (They don't chase after targets that can be insta-kiled? To be exact, they start-and-stop/start-and-stop...)

I like them plenty. They're only really good en masse on defense, far away from the wormhole, but that's fine. Although the latest change made individual units a bit more useful, as well as attacking with them.

I haven't played with them yet since the patch, but I'm happy as long as the attrtioner can still be used to pull all enemies from a planet. Since that was the main reason I used them (or actually just one of them, didn't need more :P).

Wow, so I'm not the only one. See mantis post 4477: Strange Spirecraft Ion Blaster auto-move to attack behaviour

Anyways, back on topic.

Sadly, planets strong enough that I would want to use an attritioner to help with DPS are the same planets I would not want to free everything on, due to them being strong.

However, this does seem to buff their usefulness on defense.

I so wanted to try the new Attritioners and Ion Blasters that I ended up starting a new game of AI War instead of playing the AVWW Beta. Both craft are now much improved.

The Attritioners are great for large waves of low-HP craft, especially if the Attritioners are well protected and tractor/gravity turrets are used around the wormhole; it's brilliant seeing vast numbers of ships all die at once (all the more so when they are those nasty Etherjets trying to steal my ships). Kind of a shame that gravity drills are buildable from the Zenith trader, as that would make for a fantastic defense. I've only used them defensively though, so I can't comment on their offensive uses. It's kind of difficult to judge how much difference the extra damage that they are now dealing back out when a ship dies is doing, but they certainly feel more powerful.

The Ion Blasters are good too and seem to work as intended in that they can still do useful damage against things that they can't insta-kill.

I wonder, is it a bug that the spire ion blaster if told to shoot one ship by itself, if it doesn't insta kill due to being to high a mark it will only fire off one round a salvo instead of all four?
