Spire Tractor Platforms
« on: February 25, 2011, 09:15:04 am »
Ok.

So I was happily stealing collecting knowledge from an adjacent AI planet
where I built the markIII knowledge collector so I could borrow some of it from the
enemy planet.

As I started building it, as usual, the AI got really mad and dozens of ships started pouring
from the ai command post. I had a flagship and fifty Viral Shredder so that when they would attack
the enemy, their number would constantly grow. I reached two hundred Shredders, keeping the enemy
at bay, it seemed like an ancient civilizations battle, where a line was kept by a column of soldiers.

Anyway, suddenly the projection started to change. In fact from 200shredders, as I saw later,
cos I also had to think about defending my homeworld, there were only 50.
I've noticed that killing the enemy let the AI accumulate Spire Tractor Platforms, as they can't
be damaged by the shredder. Anyway there were like thirty, forty of them, something I found weird
as their attack is really high (14.000x21), their armor was "Turret", so harder to destroy, and
they also could trap in their beams my ships.

They kept raising their number, till there were something like 60-70 of them, which decided to go
to my homeworld, defended not heavily, but with practically full tier one of missile launchers and MRLS turret. Even with this defense they managed to make me lose destroying my Headquarter.

So do you have any suggestion?

Of course I shouldn't have tried to steal the enemy reseearch so soon in game, but still, how can you defend against the Sipre Tractor Platforms. They're really strong, and they don't seem to have particulary weak points. Unfortunately I seem to have encountered a kind of AI which relies heavily on them. (moderate/easier difficulty, both AI at 7)

Thanks for the anwsers (I'm kind of new to the AI war series, which I find AWESOME, and being spoiled by the old age of empires like games turtling, playing against an enemy which can destroy any defense I try to make it's really challenging and fun!!!)

Not much you can do about those buggers. Stack forcefields, and be sure to have plenty of turrets around. Minefields might help, too.

The weak link in your plan was probably relying fully on shredders for defense. Relying on one single ship type in general is probably going to come back to bite you, but shredders especially. They're great against smaller fleet ships, but against anything with higher HP they're not just weak, they're completely useless. 0 damage isn't going to get you far. Just be sure to bring a variety of fleet ships to deal with anything you run in to next time you go knowledge raiding.

They rock. I find the AI spamming them at me, first game where the AI actually takes some lead in the fighting and isnt dancing around/chasing me  8)

Have some FFs over the wormhole to your homeplanet and you should be fine. Any ships they pick up with their tractors is sure to be able to hit them, so that isnt a biggie if they cant go anywhere.

Shredders do rock, no argument here. Although I think I may try a game without them for once just to see if my strategies rely too heavily on them. I want them to be a tool, not a crutch! Is there a way to turn off zenith caches without just turning off TZR entirely? (And yes, I know in theory I could just not shoot the cache when I see it. I'll admit up front that I don't have enough self control to resist those sweet sweet caches for the full length of a game) And for that matter, if I turn off an expansion for one game, will its music still be in the rotation? I'd hate to limit that.

You could always pop them and than delete the ships, no going back after that :)
(Instead of 'cheating' you will actually just plain make the game harder as you just took an AIP-hit .. for no reason.)

I trained myself to ignore them. Don't even see them anymore.

And I pop em every time I see em :D

So useful, the bombers and the shredders are invaluable.
