Spire Archive ?
« on: September 04, 2013, 03:48:54 pm »
I have 2 Archives spawned in one system. Is that unlucky, is the cap 9k each now or do they always spawn in the same system ?
thanks

The cap is 9k if that happens, so you lose an effective archive. It's really unfortunate, as it's not generally supposed to happen but can in certain cases.

Bad luck there.

You will cap out that 9000 twice as fast, though!

2 archives on one planet? wow I never had that. That sucks, if you need them. Maybe new spawning rules should apply?

Just had this happen in my current game. Considering that in decreases the reward while increasing risk (the archives both have to be protected or you take a catastrophic AIP hit) it does seem like it should be actively prevented. I'd rather one archive didn't spawn at all than that two of them end up in the same system!

They both have to be protected, but only for half as long, as the knowledge is accumulated at twice the rate.  The game does try to avoid this, but on some maps it's unavoidable.

If the game is actively trying to avoid placing both Spire Archives on the same planet, there is a bug.  Take a look at this screenshot - Two archives on the same planet, when there were 10 possible worlds they could have gone on (5 for one homeworld, 5 for the other).

It may not happen every time, but often enough.  This was the second map I created to check.  Of 10 maps I checked, 5 were good, 2 were bad (both Archives in the same system) and 3 were mixed (both archives near only one homeworld).

Fair point about the halved time, my leaning is still to say that the net effect is a significant risk increase for the player, though.

Ah, sorry, seems I've misremembered.  Did some searching and the only quote from Keith I could find was this:
Yea, the interaction [of two Spire Archives on the same planet] isn't intentional but I think it makes sense as a random permutation: less overall opportunity, but the AIP cost is no higher unless the AI kills the archives, and it has half as much time to do that as normal.
