Unit of speed
« on: November 11, 2009, 11:06:15 am »
I have always wondered, what is the unit for speed. It clearly is not distance per second, otherwise it would take fighters over 4 minutes from beeing engaged by a cruiser to beeing able to shoot at it. And this only takes a couple of seconds.

Soo speed per 'turn'?

Cheers,
K'Toff

It's actually "number of game units moved per game cycle."  So the speed x4 would be the number game units moved per turn, or speed x20 would be the number game units moved per second.  In Fast & Dangerous combat style, all ships and shots actually move at double their stated rates in terms of actual game units traversed.  Good question!

Well, for me I naturally get used to a number in-game, the 'feel' of it instead of being more calculative.

Thanks x!

@spikey
ya you are right, i mean, twice as fast means twice as fast, but somehow i like to know the units of numbers i see (and i notoriously make angry red marks whenever my students forget them ;) )

No problem!  And ah, I see you are a teacher, that explains a few things. ;)  My wife is also a teacher, just finished up her student teaching, actually.

Teacher, huh?  I usually leave all my units until the end, haha.

I gotcha -- yeah, two of the AI War alpha testers are Physicists/Chemists (their work in industry involves both, and they have both degrees).  For the longest time as a kid I thought I wanted to be a Physicist since my uncle is, then I learned more about it and came to my senses. (I kid, I kid. ;))  Subject still fascinates me, but I don't have any great proficiency at it.

     In keeping with my new tradition of coining terminology that doesn't have any preconceived notions attached: speed is now measured in macrozips per tichron.
