Something I just noticed about AI wars ships.

I was playing AI war this weekend and something just struck my mind. The ships in AI war strongly reminded me of something but I couldn't place my finger on it. Not until yesterday. Before I say it aloud, do anybody remember SHMUP from 90's called Tyrian? If you do, you probably already know what I'm chasing here.
Noticing the referance took me back to the "good ol' days" of early 90's

I don't what's the truth behind this, but it certainly made me laugh in a good way.
