Question about hacking
« on: October 24, 2013, 04:36:55 am »
If you are hacking on a planet with more than one fab on it like a core fab of some sort and a turret controller, how does that figure in to charging for the HaP?  I ask because in the game I'm playing each of the two Fab Hackers I've dropped have charged more HaP than the drop down notification window says.  Each of the two systems had 2 Fabs.  Also the HaP cost increase does not seem to match the given formula either (I think.)  It It hasn't been terribly problematic but it would be nice if there were mention of this and the drop down window would reflect this as well.

Should I Mantis this?
Attached saves are before and after I Fab hacked on planet Vulcan (innermost ring at 3:00.)

I have another question.

If you design corrupt a backup server and then at some point afterward destroy the command station on the planet you design corrupted, does the design stay corrupted or do you have to hack again wherever the backup spawns?

been a while since I played AI war so I'm not sure about your first question. I do recall seeing something weird with the calculation of hacking progress, but I don't remember what I was hacking.

As for your second question... Once you successfully hacked something, the effect of it will stay. So if you design corrupt something, the AI (or just one of the AI's?) won't be able to use the ship in question anymore throughout the entire game, even if you destroy the command station there later. Just finish hacking before you do so and you're fine.

In my personal experience it's often better to steal a ship design than to corrupt it though, unless a certain AI ship type is really really bothering you.

Hope I've been of some help =)

I'm quite sure that if you design corrupt something it will work just for that particular AI, while the other one could still build it

edit: for the first question: I had no time to check your saves, yet, so I'll go by memory.
The  amount of hacking progress of each action will change so that the more you use it the higher the cost will be (every time is 1.5x the previous one - first time the cost is what is written in placement tooltip)

the current cost of every action is displayed in the tooltip that appears if you hold mouse cursor on "hacking progress: X" purple text (top left of the screen) - IIRC that cost is "used" when hacking is complete.

It's been a while since I tried that case specifically, but it should charge you HaP as if both hacking events completed sequentially.  Since the hacking cost increases, what you end up being charged will be more than twice what the dropdown displays before the hacks complete.
Aka, first hack complete, charged Cost_in_dropdown (x).
Second hack immediately completes, charged Next_cost_in_dropdown (x * 1.5).
Dropdown now displays Next_Next_Cost (x * 1.5 * 1.5).

Hacking simultaneously can get you an extra hack you might not be able to afford under normal circumstances, but it can also drop you quickly into debt that is difficult to recover from.

@Zoutzakje: I thought that was the case but I couldn't remember, so yes, quite helpful.  I was wanting to take the system that had a backup I corrupted so I could link my empire.  And Tackle Drone Launchers...definitely annoying...it had to go.  It was tempting to download them but in this game I think I'm better off with the corruption.  TBH I think design corrupting has made this game possible for me to survive since I've been able to remove some of the more deadly ships from the Vorpal/Extreme Raider AI's inventory in my game.

@Toranth: I thought something like that was going on but it's nice to have confirmation for understandings sake. Thanks.
