So admit it...
« on: February 16, 2011, 05:35:22 am »
I recently saw an Urquan Masters profile picture out there, and I was wondering. How many of you played this awesome game? If I had the power to MOD AI War, I would make an Urquan Masters mod.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

That game was awesome. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, you can download the game from the Open Source development page which you can get to with a simple google search. It's awesome, probably in the top 5 2D games ever designed. If you're looking for something with hours of gameplay, really amazing story depth and a huge galaxy of unique planets and encounters to explore and a spiffy Midi soundtrack, you'll love this game. It's awesome.

Just make sure you don't take too much time away from AI War!

Guilty for knowing what you talk about and mostly agreeing with you.

<---Points to avatar.

I haven't played Ur-Quan Masters for a bit, but I did a couple of years ago and of course owned and played the original SC2 for years back when I had a 486. SC1 & 2 were fantastic but SC3 was only marginal.

Oh wow nice! I gotta see about doing that lol. I never bothered to play SC3. Nobody takes the storyline as cannon, bad reviews for the most part on gameplay, and last of all... puppets?

I've heard of it, but never knew you could download it for free. If it's as good as you all seem to make it out to be, then I guess I should give it a try sometime.

Yeah, the game had a lot of problems. The only thing I did enjoy was playing with the new ships, but some of them like the Herald Eradicator were heavily out of balance. The SC novel that came out at about the same time was abysmal too.

SCIII was made by a completely different development team. SCII was made for Toys for Bob (Who still made games occasionaly, and sometimes fairly big ones) who always wanted to return to the series. After petitioning for months to Ubisoft with a large backing of players numbering several thousand, Ubisoft decided to make one. And they made it themselves.

That baby was SCIII, which made no money and sucked noodles :P

Yep, Ur-Quan is the opensource reimplementation of Star Control, and it runs on just about anything with a processor in it.

Yeah I was amazed how bad SCIII was until I found out that Toys weren't involved anymore. They brought us such greats as Archon I & II and you can see the old Archon influence in SC's combat system. SC 3's puppet's were so bad they ruined the Syreen. Cossack pointed out bad the puppets were when you realize how much better the Syreen Commander, Talana, looked in SC 2 compared to the squash headed thing we got as a joke for them in SC 3. The K'Tang were amusing but the whole story was just tedious.

Yeah, I played SC1/SC2 a lot when they came out. There are too many great things about SC2 to be listed. It's awesome.

Did Star Control 2 have the same storyline as Urquan Masters? Or was Urquan literally SCII - 2?

its pretty close - i think the main things changed are some pacing and minor balance things, but the storyline, as far as i remember, is the same

I was an extremely hardcore SuperMelee player.  Every once in a while I wish that a well-developed online one-on-one combat remake would appear, but I feel like I'm in the minority; Any time I talk to friends about SC2, it's all about the RPG aspects and nothing about combat.

Does anyone other than me *really* like SuperMelee?
