Ship formations.
« on: June 18, 2011, 11:17:32 pm »
Specifically Arc move, or the circle formation. What's the hotkey for it now?

Tried searching but all I can find is http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,5984.0.html which isn't up-to-date from what I can tell.

Formation mode is J+right-click, iirc, and all it does is maintain current offsets from the selection's averaged center.  There's also a sticky-formations control on the controls screen that saves you from having to hold J all the time (just the first time you want to set them in formation), if you prefer that way of doing it.

Arc Move was a beta feature that didn't make it into the 4.0 official (wasn't ported during the port to the Unity3D engine).  It was a feature I thought was really cool so I implemented it in the betas and had a lot of fun with it, but after the 4.0 official I found that there was an embarrassingly small number of requests to add it back (same with a bunch of other cool little context menu functions I added around the same time) so I figured the time was better spent elsewhere.

Thanks for this, this was the first question that came up the moment I joined this forum.

Actually, I maintain that the context menu had more uses than some people are willing to try out.

Save & Paste building constellations
was my favourite...I miss it a lot, every time I fortify a CC, a Settlement, a Factory, Fabricator or one of the dozens of frontline wormholes  :'(

The editable-galaxy-map is one I do plan to bring back as it was more widely used than some of the others.  But it was also suspected (by me, at least) as one of the sources of the never-dying desyncs we were encountering for a while, so for the sake of scientific analysis I had to leave that variable out until the desyncs were finally gone.  Judging by the length of time since 5.010 was released and the fact that absolutely zero actual desyncs have been reported, I think that's been satisfied :)

I never actually got to use any of the pre-4.0 beta features, because I never used any of the betas until after 4.0.  I read about them and thought some of them sounded neat and looked forward to trying them, and then they mysteriously disappeared, never to be heard from again.  I don't even know whether I should be missing them and requesting them back or not, and by now I've forgotten about most of them.

I like the sound of "editable-galaxy-map", though.  If that means I can rearrange the systems manually so they're not so impossible to make out the connections on half the map types, I will happily trade that for a two week delay in AVWW.  I'd probably get nearly a month of "new game feel" out of AI War from that just by being able to play on all those map types, because usually when I try to now it's like, "My OCD sense is tingling!"  Heh.

I should clarify that the editing of the galaxy map was never anything that could impact the actual gameplay; i.e. none of the links can be changed, you're just telling it to draw a planet in a different place on the screen.  But it was pretty useful for those of us who liked that kind of thing.

Yes, that's exactly what I've been dreaming of addressing.  Not quite as fancy as making the initial layout generator better, I suppose, but much easier to do.

I created a thread about this that is at the bottom of the main page. Feel free to vote for the feature coming back.
