Shared challenge or a way for a newb to learn.
« on: February 08, 2013, 05:40:58 pm »
Hey all,

If you cant tell I am a little new around here but having fun.  I love the fact that I get pummeled in most of my games scratch that in all of my games.  It means I must adjust :-)  one thing I like to do is go over the games kind of like the after action reports but thought it would be fun if we could get a group of people doing the same map with different results kind of to compare and contrast.  so I put forth a shared challenge for the community as a learning process for me and other newbs.

This is what I am thinking
2 x vanilla 7 ai's for the enemies
Planets: 80
map style: realistic
campaign type: conquest
Seed: 339515328
Ships: normal
Game options default
AI Options I used random 4 and got
human marauders 3/10
human resistance fighters 3/10
human colony rebellions 3/10
Zenith Dyson Sphere 2/10
Zenith Devourer
Broken Golems Hard 2/10
Neinzul Rocketry corps 1/10
Neinzul Preservation Wardens 4/10
Spire Civilian Leaders
Spirecraft Hard 4/10

no ai modifiers
no ai plots

Now I would of attached a save game but I want people to be able to pick what starting area they want (and give the reason why)

Overall I know I am in over my head here since on the ai options I dont know what any of them mean but the fun is in learning and failing right?

P.S.
Mod if this is in the wrong area I am sorry feel free to move it wasnt sure where to post it here or aar or strategy heck in a way its match making too :-P
First report to follow soon

Well this is going to be  a run down on my aar there will be two different games here one for while at work and one for at home since i am one of the lucky ones who gets to play during down time

Spoiler for Hiden:
Work
Well one hour in and I started the surgery with a hammer.  I started in Riber because the ship there looked like it could be fun to work with and it gave me a little bit of a cushion to start with.   The first hour is just to take what is near me to give my home base a cushion so 4 planets down no sign of real trouble but ai progress is up to 92 now

phase two will be scout and get out the scapple for some surgical strikes to hopefully get some more ships and lower that ai progress a bit.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Home

This time I went with Boatlik because the starter ship looks interesting.   once again first hour was a cushioning with my hammer and just pushed out in each direction.  I left chrvil since it has a core processor.   I have done a bit of scouting and learned that spire civilian leaders hurt when in the hands of the ai (ai progress at 88)   I am thinking my goal at this point is to at least hold 3 of them so that it negates the increase I am getting each hour. oh and to find out why spoiler tags dont work

Well 3.5 hours in now and I have survived some scary waves and am now working on getting my first golem a regen up and running.  my ai progress is at 130 and I have the whole map scouted but the ai progress is worring me since it is going up about 9 an hour not counting any planet i take

Spoiler tags are a plugin this forum does not have.

you can use
Code: [Select]
spoiler text here instead.

Now, as for your challenge. I'm not going to actually start the game, but looking at the starting positions available it boils down to 3 planets for me.

Defensively, the biggest challenge is going to be the exo-waves from Golem and Spirecraft hard so I want a defensive buffer around my homeworld. That means capturing all systems adjacent to my homeworld. To keep AIP down, that means a homeworld with only 2 wormholes.

So, that's Tiro (Electric Shuttle), Sizingmond (Cutlass), Cumifku (Yng Tiger) I can pick from.

Those three all have roughly the same strategic positioning, in terms of number of hops to get somewhere, so it comes down to which ship you like best.

For me, that would be the Tiger, so Cumifku would be my starting homeworld.

You'll note that for me personally, warpoint connections and layout is more important then ship type. It is why I've taken to blindly hitting "Generator Map" and then "Start Game" without even looking at the map or ships available so I get surprised by what I have to deal with.

Anyways, you have your games underway, let us know how they go.

yea i was hopping the spoiler tags would work to shrink the wall o text that a report gives you.   so defense more important then ship type as a general rule huh

Well, it really depends on playstyle and what's enabled.

If you did not have the exo-waves coming from the spirecraft/golem hard, it would be a lot less of a concern.

In my current game I've actually left my homeworld exposed to AI waves all game and just handled them when they came.

For me personally though, exo-waves are a lot more troublesome to defend against then a regular wave so I'm not sure I can handle them without a buffer around my homeworld.
