Serial error
« on: January 23, 2010, 01:10:09 am »
I keep getting an error when I try to start AI War.It says it has to do with something about the serial, which makes sense since it started occurring after Steam installed the 3.0 update and I had to put in my serial key.

I bought my copy through Steam, if that is any help.

What exactly does the error state? What serial did you enter into the game? (not the exact one of course but the game has 2 on Steam, Steams serial code and Arcen games serial code - the second can be used on any copy).

Just checked my steam activated copy and only the steam serial is showing up, though I used the one I got from GamersGate to 'activate' the game on Steam and to re-unlock the game when 3.0 came down.

If you bought the game pre 3.0 you'll need to re-enter your original AI War serial code first on startup and then enter the zenith expansion pack code in the settings menu.

I was trying for about 10 minutes to enter my Zenith code before realising what was needed ;)

If you're having trouble finding your serial code, just right click on AI War in the my games menu and there's an option to bring up the code.  You can then copy it straight into AI War when you load it up.

Hi V22,

I am suspecting that your error might actually not be related to the serial at all, based on what you said -- it sounds like you might be having a "serialization error," which is .NET's way of saying that it cannot convert some data from text to binary.  In this particular case, that would mean if your settings.dat file was corrupted somehow.  If that is indeed the problem, simply removing or renaming your settings.dat would fix it up (but then you'd have to re-enter your profile information, license key, settings, and re-win offline achievements and high scores -- savegames are unaffected, so simply loading up old saves fixes it).  Settings.dat is either located in the game folder, or under C:\Users\yourname\AppData\etc.  If it is giving you an error on load, it should also be giving you a directory where the error details are logged.  If you go to that directory, you'll be able to also find the settings.dat.  Hope that helps!

The steam directory is probably C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ai war fleet command or similar.  If settingds.dat is not in there, then it's in your Users directory, under AppData.  Let me know if you can't find it, though.  Hope that helps!
