select only my ships (multiplayer)

In a multiplayer game, how do I select all of my units in an area, without selecting other players'?

I spent several minutes looking through the controls menus and I have the "AI War Pocket Reference" open here, but I can't find this.

I would suggest control groups or the list on the right

Unless another player has 'Allow team control of units' (or something similar, I don't remember the exact name), you can't move their units in the first place afaik.

Yes, we've turned that control on.

And maybe, once we've turned this on, we should stop thinking them about them as "my" ships and "your" ships and consider them "our" ships instead, but we're not that good at sharing yet. It's a useful way to divide forces once they've been tangled up in a blob, and keeps us working with the ship types we've each chosen in the tech tree.

Specifically, because you can't put ally ships into control groups. 

I usually have a space dock and starship constructor devoted to my primary fleet that I put into control group 1, then everything they build is in control group 1 and I can easily select my fleet.
