RPS Names AI War 25th Best Strategy Game of All Time
« on: April 28, 2015, 04:50:05 pm »
Not sure if anyone posted about this, but Rock, Paper, Shotgun named their 50 best strategy games of all time and AI War came in at #25.  Lists like this are always controversial, but's good to see that AI War has a place on this one.

(obligatory) List is trash, no mention of Dune 2 or Herzog 2.  ::)

My eyes must have glazed over the AI War shoutout when I first read the piece, so thanks for pointing it out.

EDIT: Wait, I remember why I hated this list and everything it stands for: Command and Conquer appears nowhere. While C&C 4 somehow did manage to be bad enough to wipe away everything positive about the franchise, it still stands as a worthy example of how to properly do setting and world building, presentation and story. Until C&C 4 of course.

RIP Westwood.

Reading their postscript, I will be so bold as to say it is intentionally. It mentions some smaller games to give cool shout outs, but leaves out some larger ones to generation discussion / pageviews.

It is cynical but it is what I think.
Life is short. Have fun.

The ordering of that list is pretty bad... also missed some great games like SC1:BW which grew like crazy in Korea and helped bring esports to where it's at. I realize they did SC2 but they did two CiV games (Both at #1 and #2 which again I disagree with but that's because you can't claim a single best strategy game.)

But I'm happy AI War made it, now if only they would've placed it higher up.

Couple titles I recognize:
Age of Wonders II: totally deserving of being on the list.
Rise of Nations: I played a bit of the fantasy version, Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends, and I thought it was pretty slick.
Battle for Wesnoth: I never got into this one, but I have heard good things.  It's got really nice race differentiation to the point that playing the Necromancer with an army of undead is a very different game.

XCOM, Homeworld, Men of War, I played a bit of.  I got stuck in Homeworld, inadvertently put myself in an unwinnable situation (the "computer virus takes over the frigates" level), but I enjoyed the time I did spend.  XCOM I don't think I ever played the "good" one.  Men of War I highly recommend just for the physics.  There is nothing quite like firing a shell through a building, hitting a tank, having the shell bounce off and kill another tank.

Transport Tycoon:

What else should I be playing if I like this: Cities in Motion
Oh god, avoid Cities in Motion.  Its broken beyond playable.  You'll have a bus stop at the corner to pick up riders, and the traffic will back up behind it, all the way around the block, and prevent the bus from moving.  They hot-fixed this to make other vehicles despawn after 3 minutes of not moving (which works out to be like a week of game time).  As you gain income based on actually picking up riders, but pay expenses based on game-time, this quickly makes an otherwise profitable route a debt spiral.  CiM2 may have fixed it, but I never looked to find out.
