RIP Community Wiki
« on: May 16, 2011, 12:29:49 pm »
So, the idea of a "community wiki" was something that was popular at the time I introduced it over a year and a half ago.  However, it never got all that much use except by spambots.  By the end, there were over 700 users, most of which were spambots, and I discovered tons of links out to adult sites, phishing sites, and more.

I have been fighting a daily battle over the main index page for a few weeks; every morning I'm notified that it has changed, and every morning I'd ban the user that put in the spam, then rollback the change.  Only took a few seconds each day, but it was annoying.  I only found all the other pages just today; there were dozens of them.

THIS is precisely why the main Arcen Wiki isn't open to public editing, in case anyone is wondering.  But for community members that volunteer to help out with the main Arcen Wiki, we do provide accounts if you PM us that you're interested.  So far that has worked really well, as that gets at least some community help with the main wiki while at the same time keeping out the incredibly huge amounts of spam we were otherwise seeing.

And meanwhile, of course, most strategy discussion has been happening in the strategy discussion subforum, since people seem more interested in this format rather than the wiki format, anyhow.

Just wanted to let folks know what has happened! :)

Your post in the Need Strategy Advice? sticky still needs updating at the moment.  It mentions both the now defunct community wiki and the player strategy section that was also on it.

Yeah, I just wish the search was better on the forums or something... half of the time it's hard to find an answer to a specific question so I just ask it again, and I'm sure it ends up wasting collective cycles. Alas.

Obsessive fans love being able to talk about their particular obsession. You can observe it in hobbies that ran the gamut from AD&D to Minecraft to Football. In general, the listener is less than thrilled about this prospect. Don't think of it as wasting time asking the same questions over and over. Think of it as giving nerds an outlet for their obsessive chatter, so that our girlfriends/wives/friends/etc. don't have to put up with it.

That was literally the best 'silver lining' I've heard someone come up with in years. Way to turn negative to positive extremely effectively.  :P

You just won an internet with this post.  Congrats.  :)

this. I don't care how many times a question has been asked on this forum. If I know the answer, I'd be happy to share it. which is why I ask questions myself, knowing that there are more people like me out there :P
Chris and Keith don't seem to be bothered by all these questions either :D
