returning (newbie) player : questions

1. if I place ships/turrets behind (not into, behind) a force field, and they shoot enemy beyond the FF, through it, do I get -75% damages too?

2. How do I stop a rampaging golem from wrecking havoc to one of my system? Do I need to retreat all combat ships until he is out of it?

3. I'm constantly under attack from a Threatening Eye AI post, I have no ship in the system, yet it seems every 20 seconds or so, it sends a bunch of ship to attack one of my system. Is it ok? I thought it would activate only if I was IN his system, with too many ships?

Or perhaps I'm mistaken... what are the conditions that make the AI send a new group of ships attacking one of my system. This is not a wave, mind you, just that ships pop up regularly, coming from the adjacent system.

1. No.

2. If the golem is AI-controlled, then I'd suggest shooting it.  A lot.  If you're talking about the Devourer, then yes, you'll want to retreat and hide until it leaves.

3. Threatening eyes only trigger off a large human presence in their own system.  It sounds like you have an active Neinzul Nest, Raid Engine, or similar structure active, or are seeing aggression from a large amount of threat ships.  It's hard to tell from your description.

Perhaps.. Hybrids change the game in a way quite different to other plots, as they make the AI bring the fight to you a lot more often. AIW is generally a game which goes at the players pace, but this is not the case with hybrid hives enabled as they put far more pressure on the player to act quickly or they build up to overwhelming numbers.

Honestly it sounds like you're playing with a lot of stuff turned on that may be quite a bit too much for a returning player. My advice would be to turn things like the devourer and hybrid hives off until you've got your feet back.

For the Devourer Golem, I suggest just packing your ships into transports. He won't attack those, and you don't need to constantly move your ships in between worlds (where they might even be followed by the DG).

What's the Iron Cross for, btw?

Here you go, this is the system where I have the most ships, it is surrounded by 3 others. It gets a lot of attacks which are not waves. If someone can tell me why?

Well in this save you are definitely under attack by hybrids, but not on the system next to the threatening eye (which is not the cause btw). There does appear to be human resistance fighters on that planet attacking the AI, which could perhaps be causing ships to be freed into threat that then attack your planet but I'm not sure as this seem unlikely to me.

There is a surprising number of MKV ships too, so I'm guessing that maybe you recently did a fallen spire shard retrieval? Again, this could have been the cause as the AI sends lots of stuff after you during these missions.

I scouted further out (which I recommend you do in future before attacking-  at least scout the planets behind them in case of raid engines etc) and found nothing of interest so I'm convinced you are just getting hit by either leftover response to shard retrieval or hybrids.

Since it's on topic, I have a little question of my own...

If I place Laser Turrets under a forcefield, and shoot at Vampire Claws also under the forcefield, do I still get -75% damage?

There's nothing special going on. You're just being attacked by Wardens and Enclaves. Those are minor factions you have enabled and have nothing to do with the Threathening Eye. No Hybrids or Threathening Eye involved just Wardens and Enclaves.. maybe some threat ships. AI Eyes only activate if you attack an AI planet with an Eye with overwhelming force.

I noticed you have placed most of you turrets under Force Fields. Unless the turrets are Lightning or Flak Turrets that's not a good idea. Also your defenses are scattered around and some of the turrets are right next to wormholes.

I recommend you check out my AI War guide. Especially the "Defense" section.
Look at the screenshots to see how I've placed the turrets and minefields.


You also have a TON of unused Knowledge.. +18k. This means you're much weaker than you could be.

thanks for the feedback. I enjoy being lost in the features of a game, and that's why I enabled almost everything in this game... I guess I should have tried to figure myself why I was attacked. I don't think I enabled anything special though, definitively nothing spire-esque.

yes my defence setting deserves some upgrading! Will check your AAR or videos, thanks.

This game's a little bit unique in that, you really get a full fledged feature set without any minor factions and AI plots enabled. Those extra settings are just extra content to add on to a fully fleshed out experience, or to tweak your game in really interesting ways.

You are forgetting main function of extra settings. They add Fun to the game.. sometimes in very brutal ways (seen any trains around lately? or hunter/sharks?).
