High latency games
« on: September 11, 2013, 07:14:50 pm »
I'm wondering if there's anything that can be done to improve things when playing with high network latency (in the 400-600ms region). The game continually stutters, presumably due to having to wait for messages to be passed around to reach sync for the next game frame. Adjusting the "warp factor" upwards helps offset this a bit, but that's about it; adjusting the performance profile doesn't seem to help that much.

Have you tried adjusting the network skip?  Normal + and - affect game speed, holding shift while pressing + and - affect network skip.

The skip will delay your commands from actually taking effect somewhat (by definition), but you may find the tradeoff desirable :)

Ah, I didn't know about network skip; that definitely sounds like it could help, will try it out next time we play together.
