Missing Co-Processor
« on: September 01, 2014, 02:17:10 pm »
I think I've found a map-gen bug, but I may just be being blind and stupid.

I was planning my next steps of my current campaign when I realised I was "missing" a Co-Processor; I could only find three.  I was pretty sure I hadn't knocked one out, so I did the math for all the AIP I had accrued and reduced and got an exact match to my unreduced and current AIP totals.  So, I used the exact same settings and set up a new identical game but with FoW turned off.  Sure enough, I can only find three of them.  I can't help but feel I am being blind, but I have quadruple-checked my game and triple-checked the FoW-free map and really cannot find the fourth Co-Proc.  The Objectives list only lists three of them as well, which seems kinda conclusive.

I've included a screenshot of the galaxy map and a copy of the save.  Could anyone give me a hand spotting?  If not, I may have found a mapgen bug?

You seem to be correct - I can only find three CoProcessors.  When I duplicate your settings, and re-gen the map, it produces the same thing.

However, this is actually a Good-for-humans bug.  The last CoProcessor on the map gives the AIP reduction when you kill it, not the 4th one.  In other words, in this galaxy, when you kill the third CoProc, you get the -120 AIP.  However, since you only had to kill 2 other CoProcs, you get a net of -80 AIP, rather than the normal net of -60 AIP.

Congrats?

Without having any actual knowledge of it, my initial guess would be that the 4th CP was supposed to spawn at one of your starting planets. Have you tried starting with just one planet on that map?

Toranth, I didn't know that.  I had assumed that I was in fact very much out of luck, but my assumption was fortuitously incorrect.  Thanks for the info, I'll test it out next time I have time for play (maybe tomorrow).

WingedKagouti, yes, I actually did do that just to make sure that, well, my eyes were working or something, but the entire mapgen system runs differently, with all placed "objects" appearing in different spots.  In other words, not comparable.

Unfortunately, changing any of the starting settings can change the placement of things like CoProcessors significantly.  Even as minor a difference as one AI type, or difficulty level, can cause everything to be placed differently.  It has to do with how many pulls it does from the PRNG - changing the sequence can significantly change the result.

I didn't either, actually.  I've never seen that happen before, but I tried killing them to see what happened and that was the result.  Very interesting.  I wonder if there's a seed out there with only one CoProcessor (that would be fun).

Thanks for the save, as I can fix it if I can reproduce it.  But yes, it's a bug that helps you, so there's that :)

You're most welcome.  I'll abuse the bug for now as I seem to be doing fairly well in this game even though I haven't yet availed myself of the bonus AIP reduction and don't really want to start again just yet.
