Keeping it short--are names that are obtained from altplanetnames.txt CLIENT SIDED, or HOST/SERVER SIDE, meaning does only the person who has the modified names SEE the names, or does everyone else?

If yes, then I assume the HOST provides the names, and everyone sees the names (instead of mismatches)?

--

Is there any way of which we can actually [re]name units, as in having some sort of text overlay indicating the name of the unit (as in SupCom)?  This is trivial and frivolous; however, it adds slight flavour to a customized game!  If not, can this be implemented?

Thanks!

To your first question, that is server-sided.  Only the host matters.  When a new game is started, the names of the planets become unique to that game, and can be renamed using the Notes window in the galaxy map, for instance.  During that initial setup of the game, on the host sever, is when the altplanetnames are applied.  So, for instance, you won't see those names taking effect until you start the game (the regular auto-generated names are shown in the lobby).

This means that you don't need any sort of syncing between clients and hosts on the altplanetnames.txt files, which is nice.

For renaming the individual ships themselves, that is not something that is supported at the moment, and I doubt it will be something that makes sense to add because 1) it will increase save file size if needed, and 2) it serves no real purpose, as you say, and there are already more purposeful enhancements queued up in the suggestions forum than can be actually implemented.  This tends to mean that the "just for fun" sorts of enhancements that get added are either very quick (which this is not), or something for which there is a lot of support that a lot of people want to see (which this could be, in which case that would be how it would get implemented).  I'm not down on the idea, but there are just so many good ideas out there that I have to pick the ones that will give the most impact, if that makes sense.  My to-do list grows faster than it shrinks, and has been for months! :)

Hope that answers your questions!

Oh, I didn't know you could rename planets via notes.  Thanks for that bit of information!

Makes sense--though my assumption was that having named units wouldn't be that difficult to have in the game.  =/

Crap--sorry, I forgot to ask then; how long can planet names be, and are spaces allowed?

Thanks again for your replies.

EDIT:  Oh, and the game therefore prioritizes planet names included in the altplanetnames.txt over the defaults?

No worries!

In general, that isn't too huge a big deal -- maybe 45 minutes of work, because it needs a new popup screen, an expanded entry in the savegame file, and added display on the tooltip hover itself, plus some sort of button or hotkey (which I am low on) to actually initiate the renaming.  But I have hundreds of features of that size, is the thing.  The ones that I tend to do as a matter of course are the ones that take 10 minutes or less.  It's not a matter of any one feature, if you see what I mean, it's a matter of having to prioritize the huge, incredible volume of suggestions.

For the planet names, spaces and whatever else are allowed.  And there's not a particular inherent length restriction on them to my recollection (the textbox might stop you are 100 or 300 characters, or something like that).  But before you hit any inbuilt length restriction, you'll hit the end of the practice size they can be without causing crazy overlap on the galaxy map, etc.

Main screen turn on.
It's you !!
How are you gentlemen !!
All your base are belong to us.
You are on the way to destruction.

Take off every 'ZIG'!!
You know what you doing.
Move 'ZIG'.
For great justice.

(Since I can't type anything below there, thanks for replying again with rapid succession!)

OH!  Does it accept (I believe) non-ASCII characters?  i.e. "¿"  or 'Cyrillic Million Dollar Sign' that makes text appear in backwards fashion?

EDIT:  Yes, a very silly request (and the board corrected the typing).

The game uses UTF-8, so as long as your altplanets.txt as saved as UTF-8 and not ASCII (many text editors require you to do this explicitly, and won't do it automatically), then yes that should work.  The game will first use random selections from the altplanets.txt file when naming planets, and if there are not enough, then it will use the auto-generated names as usual.  If there are equal to or greater number of custom names in the text file, you'll never see any of the auto-generated planet names except in the lobby.
