I think two per homeworld, but the patch notes referred to some randomisation.  Yeah some of the brutal picks were around before, but they were distributed randomly, same as any of the other core guard posts, which occasionally lead to absurdly difficult homeworlds at moderate difficulties.

Off. To be honest, I don't exactly know what that does, but I don't want my AI lying down on the job. :)

I'm guessing perhaps the AI doesn't send those (very weak, in my games) retaliatory waves for posts destroyed if that's turned on?
Correct.  Plus the strategic reserve is weaker, and there's no deep-strike threat, and destroying core guard posts doesn't increase the AIP floor.

I forget what difficulty you're playing on, but a big contributor to end-game difficulty is the "brutal" core guard posts.  They include the Core Raid Engine, Core CPA, Teuthida, Grav Reactor, Wrath Lance, Hunter-Killer Factory, and Shredder Drone Guard Post, plus a whole range of Core Eyes.  The number per homeworld is a bit random, but increases with difficulty from 0-1 at difficulty <7 to 3 at difficulty 9+.  If you've been lucky with those, that might explain a relatively easy endgame, at least at low to moderate difficulty.
Me and Spelguru in our game suddenly triggered a Core CPA when Spelguru did a nebula mission beside an AI Homeworld and the friendly ships decided to go try to clear it...  I swear he tries to get me killed.

Luckily he made it home in time to shield a botnet and we devoured the entire CPA of 5600 ships on very low caps.

OK, I'm starting to think 7/7 just isn't what it was when last I played (that had certainly happened before, during some of the 4.x series I recall playing 8/8 regularly because 7/7 had lost its bite). How big is the jump to 8 these days? Should I take it to one of the intermediary difficulties or just cut straight to business?

I wish I could go back in time and experience the difficulty of AI War again and the feeling of winning a higher difficulty level than last game. And learning new things and finding new strategies.

Oh god, I don't even know any more.
I just remember seeing Yet Another Toy relegated to 8+ and suggested to Keith that a couple of them get pushed down to 7+ so that the jump from 7.6 to 8 isn't so brutal.  I'm not sure any of them did.  Check the dev log.

I wish I could go back in time and experience the difficulty of AI War again and the feeling of winning a higher difficulty level than last game. And learning new things and finding new strategies.

You can always try moving up in difficulty.  I've heard those 11/11 games can get interesting.

I can't imagine things won't get harder after the next rebalance. Things had gotten pretty easy in 4.x, but 5.0 snapped them back hard. 10/10 really shouldn't even be winnable (there literally used to be bug reports when that happened), so I've got to assume that when Chris and Keith get back to the game things will change.

You're going to need something that's good vs Heavy and Structural. Later in the game Structural is even more important because as you can see..

..Hybrids' Shields can have much more health than the Hybrids themselves. Mark I Shield Module has only 1,2 million health. I don't know how much health Mark IIs have since I was only able to find Mark Is and IIIs. Mostly IIIs.

Also you're gonna wanna select everything that's good vs Heavy and manually X+Click (Attack Move) on a Hybrid. This will make the Hybrids their "Preferred Target". Then do the same with "Structural killing things" and Hybrids' Shield Modules.. or if you feel lazy just select everything and click on the Hybrid. You can see your ships' Preferred Target under their health. If you don't do this Hybrids are the last enemy ships your ships will attack. I've noticed this dozens of times. Same applies to everything else.. you should always check what is your X ships' Preferred Target. Same with Turrets. You have to do this manually. Doesn't matter whatever you have "Focus Fire" enabled or disabled in the Controls. I've seen many times Fighters shooting at AI Fighters even when there were AI Bombers next to them.. or Missile Frigates shooting at Missile Frigates when there was a Zenith Starship next to them. So keeping this in mind will decrease casualties and increase your fleet's efficiency.


Here's a good example of an end game situation. There's 60 Hybrids on a planet adjacent to my Whipping Boy.. and they will attack when the next CPA hits. A normal Wave wasn't enough to make the Hybrids attack because I had so much Firepower on the Whipping Boy. There's only 5 next to the other Whipping Boy because I destroyed most of them and at this point there are other AI planets on alert elsewhere in the galaxy. Like AIs Hybrids seem to reinforce planets that are on alert. So now their reinforcements are split between many planets.
But if you let them.. they will stack up. Only a couple of those 60 Hybrids have Mark I Shield and Turret modules. Almost all of them have Mark IIIs and either Mark II or III Turrets. And this is only 2/10 Hybrids.

The Showdown Devices are four systems, each containing an indestructible Device.  Once you have captured and build a command station in each of those four systems, the Showdown begins.  This is an alternate end method with an emphasis on defense, and probably the hardest of all of the ways to win the game right now.
If you wish to stop the Showdown, you can lose/scrap the command station in any of the four Device systems, and then restart again later.  So it isn't as win/lose as, say, Fallen Spire.

I would suggest not looking up exactly what happens during a Showdown - it's rather fun to find out yourself.  And for the audience to hear about your reactions, too, of course.

Thanks! I use PhotoFiltre V6. Version 6 works just fine and is still Freeware unlike the newest version. PhotoFiltre Version 6 is quite old though.. maybe I should look for alternatives. I've heard a lot of good about GIMP but I never bothered to learn to use it. PhotoFiltre seemed simple and good enough.
