Problem with Saving Games
« on: August 04, 2009, 02:50:28 am »
Excellent game.  I've been playing all weekend and this evening as well.  Only problem I've run into is the following:  The more I play, I noticed it is taking longer and longer to save a game.  As I was saving my last game for the night, it appears the game finally hung up during a save: "Loading Game Data: gathering Object States..." Also at the top of the screen is: "Game Does Not Have Input Focus".

For the first day of play, saving worked fine (Sat).  By Sun it was saving slower, ~2-3min, by Mon it was at least ~5min.  As I type where I thought the game was hung, it actually came back after saving for 15min!

Dell XPS Laptop, XP, 2GB memory, 22GB free disk space, 6800Ultra video card.

Thanks

Ehm , can you attach a save that still worked (maybe the autosave?)

I have not seen this what you describe , even in immense large battles and 80 planets with dif 10 after 6 hours..

How large are the savegames?

Glad you like the game!  And yes, a savegame with this issue would be really helpful.  What sort of CPU speed does your computer have, and how many cores?  Not that this should happen with even a low-power single-core machine.  The largest savegames are only a couple of MB compressed, so it's not exactly huge amounts of data in game terms (I mean, Neverwinter Nights saves are practically memory dumps that take 50+ MB, and a lot of other games with less persistent data also have larger files).  Not sure what the issue is there yet, you might verify that you have .NET 3.5 SP1 installed and not just .NET 3.5 original.  They did make some performance improvements and bugfixes in that service pack...

Hi Chris,

I sent the save file and my CPU info.  I checked and I do have Net 3.5 SP1 installed.

Thanks

Awesome, I have it -- and I was able to duplicate your problem, it's definitely a really obscure bug.  I'll post a fix shortly (soon as I find it and fix it :) ).

No problem!  Here's a version with this fix in:  http://arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,611.new.html#new

The problem was that the AI was queuing a bunch of redundant attacks, which was causing this issue.  That's now fixed even for the older savegames, so you should be good to go.  Thanks for your patience with that!

Patch worked great, my saves are within seconds now.

Also, really like the improved graphics for weapons fire.  Previously, I could never tell who was firing at who and the whole affair was rather sterile.  Now it really looks like a battle in space should look.

Nice
