Ah I see.
Here have a save file! Check out my defenses. Those work very well. I recommend you try to do something similar. Oh and look at the In-Game Controls (CTRLS on bottom left corner of the screen). You might learn something :)

Yea, that's an old one that I've tried patching a few times.  Replacing wrongly sized sprites via patch is a curiously difficult process.

Interesting stuff, thanks!

Also noticed that some of the names of the planets are very different. Were you able to rename them or something?

First, yes you can. Use the Notes button to rename planets.
Second, you can tell mapgen to do that with altplanetnames.txt, though not in any particular order. The Mod subforum has a couple, by default the file only has Murdoch in it.

I noticed that for threatening eyes (and possibly the other ones), full carriers seem to count as one ship. I've got one telling me I have too many ships, when all I have is a couple of golems, some starships, and a small Spire fleet. He's got a carrier with 200 ships in it.

Not sure if that's intended or not.

I would say it's a bug.
Eyes can be nasty as they are and AI usage of carries shouldn't make them think that there are no ships on the planet.

Turns out I got a save of that Carrier/Eye bug, so I created a mantis report for it.

On another note about carriers: the AI had a planet with 6000 ships in carriers. Half of that appears to be from a CPA, the other half was just loose threat. They massed it all up next to a Spire City planet of mine and attacked. They won.

So to see if I could stop it, I reloaded the save and attacked the carriers with some ships instead. What ended up happening was something like this:
  • The carriers would deploy a small number of units (60ish, typically).
  • The botnet golem (hiding underneath the shields of a Spire Cruiser) would zombify almost all of them instantly.
  • Repeat

I was able to take out that 6000 ship fleet with really minimal risk, because so few of them were out at once that the botnet golem was just taking them out as they appeared. Towards the end when I had a lot of zombies they started deploying faster (an entire carrier's worth at once) and it turned more dangerous (at that point I almost lost the Botnet when a giant pile of bombers and spire gravity rippers came out).

Maybe the carriers should be a bit more aggressive in how they deploy. (Not that I'm complaining too much about stopping a 6000 ship fleet. :D )

I'm working my way towards having all of the showdown devices in a game right now, but I've noticed that advanced starship constructors don't show up as objectives. I actually do use that screen, I find it super useful. It's not a vengeance thing, I know, but it sounds like it's worth an update.

Alpha

So... Hunter plot... should these guys ever show up in neutral or player owned territory?

I was busy defending St Albans from yet *another* push from the AI. Mostly it was small fry, until I incorrectly popped a command station next to a core world and proceeded to ignore it for hours. Mark V Enclave Guardians are a horrible thing to have border aggression from.

Strategic failure aside, I'm wondering what Hunter/Killers were doing at St. Albans, the former site of my advanced factory.

I probably should have uses non-overwriting autosaves, and advanced logging... but would have should have could have.

I don't know whether this was some kind of compression (cutlasses, enclave starships, hive golem) or part of the patrol, but I'm pretty confident it is the latter since the number of H/Ks and railclusters looks about right. I also don't know if they showed up before or after I got knocked out of the system.

If hunter patrols can head towards neutral systems I may need to protect my command stations a little bit more even if my defenses hold together.

Edit: okay, I actually do have the logs turned on. If this is a bug I can create a ticket with all the attached information.

I've seen it happen, but generally it seemed like it was a neutral planet with an SF post on it, which iirc is fair game.

Please do create a report with any relevant saves and logs (notably, the SF log) :)
