I just answered a question on it in the forum, and had some trouble with it myself:

It is not clear that to operate the Ship Selection Filters, one must hold N and number and then make a selection.
Intuitively, one would make a selection and then press N and number.

It may be worthwhile to add this to the Ship Selection Filter section.

Yep, it should appear in your install as well. It lives here so you can print it off wherever you want without installing the game (like at uni ).

What about a 40% speed boost, but have AI ships accelerate faaar faster than human ships, due to human body constraints? Would something like this make a difference?
