Might buy this game: Question on Multiplayer
« on: April 23, 2010, 11:35:38 am »
This game looks interesting to me, I might grab it.  Its on sale through Impulse right now.  I needed to check how the multi-player games were hosted though.

Are they hosted through Impulse?

(If so)Would Steam Players be able to see the games of, and/or play in Impulse players games?

I ask because there was just a game with an issue where this really mattered.  Sol Survivor is a "competitive tower defense" sorta designed for at least 2v2 online play.  Its for sale on both Steam and Impulse.  I got it on Impulse and wasn't able to ever play it multi-player because apparently most of the Sol Survivor fan base choose Steam and the two platforms would not connect.  Personally I'd rather buy from Impulse because I respect them, but I wouldn't want to have another "Sol Survivor" situation where I bought it specifically for multi-player then found I'd have better luck getting games on Steam.....

Multiplayer games are completely independent of steam/impulse/whatever else. You just type in the IP of the host, and it'll (most likely) connect as long as the host has their router/firewall set up correctly.

The downside is that there's no game browser or anything like that, but this isn't really the kind of game where you have random pickup games with dudes you don't know - a game generally takes many, many hours to finish.

No need to worry if you get it on impulse. I've got a copy on steam and have played with other steam users and with people who didn't get it through steam or impulse, and it worked fine. The network code is independent of the distibution platform as far as I know, so as long as you know the IP address you're connecting to, you'll be fine. Enjoy!

I bought the game on Impulse, and registered the game on steam using the registration code, which is pretty cool.  But the multiplayer has no connection to either Impulse nor Steam.  On the other hand, the only way to connect in multiplayer is direct IP or local network, but that tends to be OK since the length of AI war games prohibits pickup games like other strategy titles.

Also, a bit off topic, AI War is on sale on Impulse right now. :)
