Grenade Launchers vs Frigates

Just an odd thing I noticed, according to the mouseover on Grenade Launchers, they're weak vs Frigates.  In fact, so weak that it lists they do -100% damage against them.  So I was a bit surprised when my pack of frigates got rolled by an equal group of grenade launchers early in the game.  From what I could tell the level 1 grenade launchers were doing 600 damage vs the frigates, which would suggest the damage isn't reduced at all.

Is it more possible to make it more straight forward, I find this very confusing, I no longer know how bonuses(if there is any) work....???

Please see the article, this is how it has always been, since before the game was released -- when folks think they are bonuses, that has always been a misconception.  I tried it a variety of ways in the past, but this was the simplest by far to present the relevant data.

It's actually MUCH more useful the way it is, compared to how it would be if it displayed damage bonuses.

Basically the strong/weak data shows who will win in an even fight. If a ship is listed as strong vs something, it will win in an even fight. If its listed as weak against something, it will lose in an even fight. There is more to it than that, of course, but if youre confused initially, just look at it that way.

I see... that makes more sense.  I presumed, based on the fact that usually the numbers line up to actual multipliers, and in cases where -100% shows on almost any unit, it is because it cannot hit it (ie: vs bulletproof).  It's odd that it lists -100% vs frigates in this case, since the frigates take a harsh beating from them.

What that is saying is that if you have 10 frigates versus 10 grenade launchers, and they start at a good range from one another and come closer, then the frigates will kill all the grenade launchers before actually taking any damage.  When the relative numbers get a bit off, and even one launcher is able to fire against those cruisers, then the scenario might be very different (as you saw).

Yes, but you can hover over an enemy unit to see how much damage your selected units will do, if you are wondering there.  There is a request out for a hotkey to toggle to see the raw bonuses in-game, and I expect that will be coming along before too long.

keep in mind of course that the strong vs and weak vs numbers also take into account ship unit caps.


For instance, bombers and fighters both have 170 unit cap, so its 1 fighter vs 1 bomber, and shows such a high fighter weak vs.
If there are 10 bombers vs 1 fighter, it would end differently..

Raptors list weak vs raiders, but raptors have a much lower unit cap than raiders.. so 20 raptors vs 20 raiders will easily end in the raptors winning
