AI War Run-able on USB?
« on: January 30, 2010, 07:19:58 pm »
Q:  I am wondering if AI War can be run directly on a USB; mainly, this would be helpful for school procrastination during spares and mini lunch LANs.  I haven't tried because school still is out after exams [for until Monday].

Q:  How do programs "run" on USBs?  Does the computer actually run the program through the USB, or do they have to send the data to a folder such as \temp on the local machine [or some other method]?

Thanks in advance.

I would imagine that it runs fine on a USB, as people sometimes run high-disk-access games like WoW on large flash drives as well. It should run fine on any removable media, actually, as long as the host machine has the necessary drivers/software installed. I dont know if there is any way to have slimdx operate off of a portable storage device. I'm thinking probably not.

AI War itself doesn't use the registry or anything, so it should run fine off of whatever, portable drives included.  But, if the prerequisites are not installed on the computer (even just DirectX 9.0c is probably highly unlikely on a public computer), then it obviously won't succeed.  Assuming the prereqs are installed, though, the rest of it will work fine.

Ah, excellent.  I'll see if the school computers have DX9--hopefully they will (some used for some basic ALICE com-science, and I know they have a few games such as SC and such).

Well, then you still need SlimDX (which I can guarantee they don't have, we are the first commercial game using it -- Spiderman Web of Shadows used it for their setup program, but not in-game).  And of course .NET 3.5, which they might have.  But without being able to install prerequisites of your own, SlimDX is probably the killer.

They might have it--who knows.  Either way, it's worth a try since they have stuff they shouldn't have amongst their network drive, anyway!

Thanks again, for the information.

Keep in mind, of course, that making friends with the compsci teacher, or a friend in the schools IT club is a great investment.
In high school, whenever I wanted to actually do something with a computer id just use the admin account.. Simplifies things.

I can vouch for that strategy as well. I was good friends with the compsci teacher at my high school, and the perks were many!

Brought this up with someone previously (Think it was Fiskbit). AI War itself will run fine but I know of few machines with SlimDX on them already. Was considering dropping AI War into a jump drive and making an autorun script to check for the prerequisites, install them (Off the jump drive) and then run the game.

I have tried it from a USB drive using Windows7 and Windows XP. Works just fine. The SlimDX needs to be SlimDX Runtime (March 2009 SP1) for some reason and there may be firewall issues as AI War does do networky things. As an aside I also tried running it from a network drive and that was ok too.
It even automatically loads and saves games to the USB. A bonus if you are fed up with the Windows 7 install putting them where MS thinks they should go.....

I myself got AI war from steam. But is it possible for me to use my key for the standalone version?
