Still struggling through my AI10 game (waves of ships coming off the Special Forces Bases are getting rather... large), and I do particularly like being able to zoom all the way out and watch the little missiles and things slowly -- at half a frame a second -- creep over and smite things. Ok, so it's not quite so bad, but 5-6k ships flying around still renders a little slow at the resolution I'm playing. :) Though I did find it noticeably faster in these 013 series updates. :)

Also the backgrounds/nebula are much nicer now. I was polite enough not to comment on the previous problem where I could see your jpeg artifacts, simply because I could not find a way of phrasing it that didn't sound like I was peering up a girl's skirt. :)

I've got some other ideas for big battles like that that hopefully will make for as much as a 3X speed boost in these circumstances.  We shall see...

Yeah, yeah... :)  I had not figured out how to solve that problem in a processor-friendly fashion, so it looked mighty bad on the higher resolutions.

IMPORTANT: The game hangs and crashes when I click the Host New Campaign button on the main menu. I can load existing save games but cannot start new campaigns. This is on Vista32.

I cannot duplicate.  I'll fire up Vista to test a bit later, but do you have the errors files that it created when it crashed?  I'd need to see those.

Unfortunately there are no error files as it simply hangs and becomes unresponsive (I shouldn't have used the word 'crash', that was misleading, I apologize). Although I'm not sure there's a huge amount that can be learned from seeing it, there's a short clip of precisely what happens here - http://www.2shared.com/file/6996553/a5f9016c/AIWar_hang.html

Hardware:

Intel Q6600
Radeon HD 3870 X2
Gigabyte GA-EX38-DQ6

I'll reinstall the game and the SlimDX environment to see if that fixes it. If there's any other information I can provide you with, please let me know.

As for the title screen background;

1. The explosions and weapon effects have no context when displayed on their own. Without ships visible, as CautiousChaos said, they do just look like colours.

2. The effects are far too bright and dynamic, and become the primary focal points instead of the information on the menu. I would suggest that if you are definitely going to show a battle in the background, you slow it down and apply filters to darken the colours, perhaps even a grey scale effect.

But i agree with Revenantus and CautiousChaos that the BG shouldn't be moving, or indeed show any battle scene at all, i am also more an "needs to be calm and relaxing" guy when it comes to menus

Totally with you on the calm and relaxing idea. I'd prefer the background were just a particularly impressive starmap, perhaps it could slowly pan about? It could also gradually transition to new maps over time.

Were you able to try the new H version?  I suspect that would fix your issue, though I am not certain...

The issue was fixed after I manually removed settings.dat, and allowed the game to create a new one.

I then put my original settings.dat back in place as a test, and it started crashing again, so it's definitely related to something in there.

I have never manually edited settings.dat.

I have attached the evil settings.dat with the serial key starred out.

Interesting -- maybe it is a specific map seed or something.  Can you email me the original settings.dat without any changes?  I'm unable to read the one that you altered, perhaps because the formatting was shifted when you saved or something like that.  Hard to say.  chrispark7 at gmail if you don't mind, and I should be able to get it sorted.  Thanks!

  • More turrets! MORE TURRETS!
Hmm... Do you have to do something special to see the ships battling it out in the background? I can't seem to see anything.

Oh -- just to alert those people (Rev especially) who were talking in this thread.  I decided against scaling down the weapons effects:  http://arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,604.0.html
