IMPORTANT: The game hangs and crashes when I click the Host New Campaign button on the main menu. I can load existing save games but cannot start new campaigns. This is on Vista32.
I cannot duplicate. I'll fire up Vista to test a bit later, but do you have the errors files that it created when it crashed? I'd need to see those.
Unfortunately there are no error files as it simply hangs and becomes unresponsive (I shouldn't have used the word 'crash', that was misleading, I apologize). Although I'm not sure there's a huge amount that can be learned from seeing it, there's a short clip of precisely what happens here -

Intel Q6600
Radeon HD 3870 X2
Gigabyte GA-EX38-DQ6
I'll reinstall the game and the SlimDX environment to see if that fixes it. If there's any other information I can provide you with, please let me know.
As for the title screen background;
1. The explosions and weapon effects have no context when displayed on their own. Without ships visible, as CautiousChaos said, they do just look like colours.
2. The effects are far too bright and dynamic, and become the primary focal points instead of the information on the menu. I would suggest that if you are definitely going to show a battle in the background, you slow it down and apply filters to darken the colours, perhaps even a grey scale effect.
But i agree with Revenantus and CautiousChaos that the BG shouldn't be moving, or indeed show any battle scene at all, i am also more an "needs to be calm and relaxing" guy when it comes to menus
Totally with you on the calm and relaxing idea. I'd prefer the background were just a particularly impressive starmap, perhaps it could slowly pan about? It could also gradually transition to new maps over time.
