How to turn trains off?
« on: July 03, 2009, 12:35:44 am »
When I start up the game and it shows you the screen where you first pick your planet, at the bottom is a series of columns with check boxes. One of the boxes is for turning the trains on or off in the game. But everytime I get near the check box a tip /explanation window opens up covering the check box !  I cannot seem to move the tip window or find a way to shut it down allowing me access to the train check box.
Could someone be kind enough to tell me how this can be done.
Thank you

Hi Fuchu,

What resolution are you playing the game at? I've noticed at some of the lower resolutions that can happen.

When the tooltip appears are you still able to see any of the text that comprises, 'Astro Trains'? Clicking the text will have the same effect as clicking the checkbox.

Hi Fuchu,

Yes, please do let me know what resolution you are playing at -- and, do you have the tooltip size increased, or anything like that?  I haven't been able to duplicate this problem (I'm the developer).  If you have a screenshot, by any chance, that would also be welcome.  Oh -- and what OS are you on, just in case, although that really shouldn't matter.

Welcome to the forums!  And thanks for your support of AI War!

I've attached a screenshot of what I believe may be the situation, or at least a similar one.

Changing the tooltip font size seems to only affect the height of the tooltip window, and not the width. This is at the minimum 1024x768.

Thanks for that, Revenantus.

You know, I'm wondering if the tooltip resizing in the lobby is a bad idea.  I'm thinking of making the tooltip upsizing just work in the main game tooltips, since the resolution isn't really consistent between the two, anyway (the lobby is GDI+, which is where the problem lies, whereas the main game is DirectX, which works great).

I can't imagine that anyone really needs the lobby tooltip text larger in the first place, since the rest of the lobby text would still be smaller; if you can see one, you can see both.  In-game, I think, is where the value of this feature lies.

I agree that the tooltip resizing is only really useful in the main game, however, because tooltip resizing is done via scaling the height of the tooltip and not the width, even with the minimum (-2) font adjustment the tooltip still covers the checkbox.

Perhaps there could be a dedicated 'Extra Info' section on the Host New Campaign screen where the tooltip text is displayed?

Oh!  Now I realize what is going on -- this is because I moved some of the checkboxes around in the lobby, and I didn't check the tooltop sizes/orientations when I did it.  Grr.  This will be an easy fix.  I think I'll cut out the upsizing here, anyway, but it's not the problem here, as you've demonstrated.

I'm all out of space, unfortunately -- on 1024x768, there just isn't any more room, and that's the min size I've got to support.  But, simply changing the orientation of the tooltips next to these specific controls will handle it:  right-aligning them to these checkboxes, rather than left-aligning them.

Wow  Thank you for the help and replies.
I used your input and found out I can hit the words instead of the check box which allowed me to unlock or lock them. No I had not changed anything to do with the font sizes. I am useing Windows Vista UGHHHHH    But that is my problem not yours.
Thank you again all of you.

Astro Train Self-destruction
« Reply #9 on: July 03, 2009, 11:47:19 pm »
Would it be possible to have Astro Trains self-destruct instead of just stopping when they can no longer go anywhere? My gates seem to get clogged with trains after I kill all the stations.

Alternatively, have them move off somewhere to the edge, out of the way...?

Cheers!

What difficulty level are you playing on?  Did you kill ALL the stations?  I guess that could happen on a very small map...

EDIT:  Actually, this is them waiting for other ships to join them.  I'll disable that with Astro Trains. :)
