Yeah, I'm liking that, too.  I presume you're asking about the Munitions Boosters, there -- those do multiply.  Each ship can only be multiplied by I think 3 or 4 boosters, though, so that can give a combined 6x-8x boost to their attack firepower.  Target those boosters first, for sure!

Ow. Ow ow. Ow ow ow. Ow. Just accidentally targeted the command station of a planet I was trying to destroy the Gate of. I can probably deal with a planet of Tech II ships at the moment, but not a planet's worth of Tech II ships with about 30 munitions boosters mixed in. :(

I lost half of my essentially maxed forces on the way back to my wormhole and lost the other half on the other side attempting to defend the swarm. Had to quit/load since even though I managed to take out most of the boosters it seems, there's no way I could pump out enough ships to defend against the ships that remained.
