Preorder xpac via Steam?
« on: November 26, 2009, 12:45:51 pm »
Hey everyone, X4000,

Are there any intentions to allow for AI Xpac preorder via steam?  I wouldn't mind getting the 25% off that's currently available?  But I don't really care.  I care more that the game is easily contained within Steam, because, though Steam is not exactly the nicest product, it does contain my stuff fairly well.  Alternatively, what is the effort required to utilize the xpac when you have pre-ordered it, yet not via Steam.

Thanks

Steam will most likely not be offering the expansion pack for prrorder until early January, and it won't include the beta versions directly through Steam because of the way they handle that. Aside from Arcen directly, Impulse is currently the only distributor planning to offer the beta directly. However, GamersGate is also offering preorders as of today, so I will talk to Steam about potentially offering preorders sooner than we had planned, but with only the key being distributed through their platform at first (not the beta files, which you would still be able to get from us). I don't know what will happen with that, given that it will take Valve staff time to set up the store, etc, and I know they have a lot else going on at the moment. But I will float the idea with them next week.

If you buy the expansion pack directly from us, you can use it as normal with the Steam version.  That does cut out the Steamworks integration (the official releases of course will not), but that's the main limitation.  Thanks for your interest in the game!

A friend of mine just preordered through Impulse, and he didn't receive a code for the beta. Should he cancel his preorder and order direct so he can get his code?

Impulse is not yet giving out beta codes, but they should be starting (I believe) tomorrow.  GamersGate is giving out codes with their preorders starting today.  It's up to your friend whether he really wants the code today rather than tomorrow, versus whether he prefers Impulse or doesn't mind using something else, as to which he should prefer.  I had wanted to have Impulse distribute the keys with preorders before now, but that was my mistake that they didn't get the keys in time.  Sorry about the confusion there!

Thanks for the info. I just let him use my preorder code for that night so we could start playing right away. I figured there was no harm since we were both paying customers (well worth the money!) and he just hadnt received a code. Is there any way he can switch it to his code when he receives it, or does it not really matter?

No worries about that, it's certainly understandable.  There's not an easy way to swap in the license code later, but as long as he has his real one on file that's fine.  As an IT admin for many years, I often had a similar sort of conundrum, and so I quite understand.

Hi, all.

Am I missing something here?  I pre-ordered from Impulse on 29 November and as of today haven't heard anything since the initial orderconfirmation, and nothing has appeared on Impulse.  Is there something I need to do to get the beta code?

Hi there, sorry to hear about the trouble there.  Stardock has the beta codes, but apparently that is still being set up; I talked to them last week about it, and they were still very busy after the return from the Thanksgiving holiday here in the US.  I will follow up with them again this next week and hopefully they will have the beta access up there very soon for those who preorder through Impulse; they have what they need from me at this point, but I know they have a busy schedule at the moment.  Again, sorry for the inconvenience there!
