Dreadnaught Question
« on: May 05, 2010, 05:02:17 pm »
Yay first post!

Long time reader, just never got around to posting.

First off I would just like to say that this game is nothing less than one of the best games I have ever played. I am an avid RTS player and have been let down lately by most RTS games. This game offered me an epic feeling game that actually made me think about how I was playing.

Greetings aside, I was wondering why dreadnaughts try to kill single units, even though it takes than quite a while to do so. I use tham mostely to take out the engines of ememy ships, as they can stop enemies dead as opposed to riot starships which have to be close to stop them completely. Is there any way to make dreadnaughts focus on destroying more engines rather than fruitlessly attacking something like an armour ship?

Welcome to the forums!  And thanks very much for your support, glad you're enjoying the game so well. :)

What version are you playing?  In the latest betas, I'm pretty sure that dreads have been updated to behave the way you are describing, actually. If not, then it's probably a bug, because we had the same thoughts as you. :)

Chris, I never set the PrioritizesEngineDamage flag on dreads since I figured it was primarily used to wreck starships, and that flag could significantly interfere with that as an auto-behavior (not with manual targeting, though).

But yea, it's quite simple to do, just let me know.

Thanks for the quick reply!

As you said, I had an older version, seems to be fixed now. Thanks for the help :)

Hmm, maybe it was the changes to normal engine damage behavior, then :)

Sure thing!  And Keith, sounds like that makes sense the way it is at present, then -- you're absolutely right on the starship thing, I overlooked that.  I guess for anything other than starships or hardened targets (force fields, etc), it should go for engine damage, but otherwise it should go for the full kill, if we have to make future changes.

Of course, Flying_Bread , something new that you might also find is that if you're looking for engine-stopping power, there's nothing better than the Riot Starship for that, while Dreads are a bit more specialized as anti-starships.  In some senses it might even be a good idea to remove the engine damage entirely from Dreads, and pump up it's ability to kill things like armor ships, tanks, etc, so that it's a bit more specialized (since it's now far second place for engine damage, anyway).

Chris, he mentioned the Riots, he just prefers the zero-floor guns on the dreads that actually stop things rather than just slow them down (the Riots can do that too, but only from within 3000 range).

Yea, the starfleet commanders are pretty brutal, you can wind up with a couple dozen spires coming at you at once...
