pre-homeworld save attached, need hints
« on: September 12, 2013, 11:48:18 am »
So this is a easier game about 12 or so hours in. I have yet to finish a game of AI war, i usually like approaching homeworlds more than actually entering. Would some kindly check this save and tell how to approach now ? I have plenty of ships and knowledge, but i dont know how i would go about trying to kill a homeworld.

The homeworld in question is to the top right and my main system is 2 clicks off.

thank you !

Hmm. I'm not the best of players, but:
Once the core-shields are down and the core-world in the way is cleared:
The Wrath lance has to die first, then the neinzul cockroach spawner, then the missile post. After that, any order should be fine. For the shielded guard posts, higher mark bombers would be a very good idea. Also, don't know what version you're on, but there may be exo-galactic waves when each post dies, so plan defence accordingly.

Your teleporting units are probably the best way to kill the wrath lance- it'll take a few attacks, but keep chipping away at it. It's by far the biggest obstacle on the homeworld itself- they're not called brutal posts for nothing. Don't touch the beams!

i don't know what to say. your empire is so disorganized. there are planets, ships, space docks, turrets and minefields everywhere.
fixing all of that would take a couple of hours..

i noticed the waves were very small even though the AIP is 217. only a couple of hundred ships. so.. you could make a couple of (3?) whipping boys to take care of the waves so you could focus on attacking.

you could unlock assault transports.. fill them with raids.. pop ions and OMDs and get out. and then start beachheading or simply attacking the planets.

EDIT: imo before worrying about AI Homeworlds you should try to be more organized. will make life easier. including attacking the AI Homeworlds.

EDIT2: I guess I could fix a couple of planets and upload the save file so you can see what I mean

EDIT3:
Your teleporting units are probably the best way to kill the wrath lance- it'll take a few attacks, but keep chipping away at it. It's by far the biggest obstacle on the homeworld itself- they're not called brutal posts for nothing. Don't touch the beams!
First he could get rid of the Tachyon Guardians and then unlock Assault Transports.. fill the ATs with Bombers, Heavy Bombers and Plasma Sieges.. put ATs into stand down mode.. fly next to the Wrath Lance.. unload and pop it. Teleporters could be used in addition to this.

but again.. Ragnarok your reeeaally should focus on making solid defenses.

If you could "fix" it and show me what I'm supposed to do, that would be great.

If you could "fix" it
sure i will

and show me what I'm supposed to do, that would be great.
defense is the backbone of your empire. so after stuff has been "fixed". do those Assault Transport things I told you about.

Assault Transports are invisible and unload everything instantly. So: destroy Tachyon Guardians and put Assault Transports into stand down mode. Fly next to an object you want to destroy.. pause, unload, unpause, pause, manually SHIFT click target the object you want to destroy and then SHIFT click back to the Assault Transport. As soon as the object has been destroyed your fleet will get back into the Assault Transport(s) and "disappear" (u know.. ATs are invisible(and in stand down mode)).

Actually.. right now.. I suggest you use the 17k knowledge to unlock more turrets and/or other defenses so you don't need to defend with your fleet. You can try "fixing stuff" in your next game.

It's good to have a certain number of "whipping boys".. planets that take all the waves.. and spread all or most of the turrets between those planets. Then turrets will only be where they're needed. Also.. turrets should be built in front of the Command Station. Command Station is the most important building on a planet. If you (will probably) lose everything on that planet. If there's an Advanced Factory or some other important building.. build the Command Station next to it so you don't have to defend 2 locations. Command Station next to the Advanced Factory and you will defend 2 important structures at once.

AND when building minefields remember to use the line placing! Stuff like this is what I mean by being organized.

When building turrets use SHIFT+ALT+Left Click to place 10 at once. Or SHIFT+CTRL+Left Click to place 5 at once. Basically all turrets in a planet should be build near Command Station and close to each other. This way all turrets will start shooting at once.. so they will have more firepower. If they're scattered around the planet the AI will pretty much destroy all of the turrets one at a time.

Force Fields and "DPS Turrets" protect the Command Station..
..Tractor, Gravitational and Counter Sniper and Counter Missile Turrets protect the "DPS Turrets"
..Force Fields protect Tractor, Gravitational and Counter Sniper and Counter Missile Turrets
Mark II Hardened Force Fields are very good for protecting Tractors and Gravitationals.

^^I don't know if defenses can get any better than this

EDIT: Just like when choosing ships.. when choosing what turrets to unlock it's important that you counter all hull types. Especially Artillery, Light, Polycrystal (the triangle). So Needler, MRLS or Flak, Missile or Lightning Turrets.

I have a homework for you. Try to replicate the defenses in the lower screenshot. :)

Well, i appreciate your help but I'm not really sure you took a serious look at the save. While i havent finished a game of AI war yet, my Steam shows 60 hours in, and that is back when i used steam to play the game.
What you are showing in the screenshots its nothing new. I place snipers at the back, i construct my cmd stations either close to fabricators/adv. factories OR in the correct distance if there is more than 1 hostile wormhole, so my defense turrets will actually engange targets leaving ALL wormholes towards a cmd station. As such, i place missile turrets not at the back, but exactly between the route ai ships will take when approaching from more than 1 wormhole.

my homeworld: only error i see is placing mines at the "back" oft the wormholes but even then its only like 10 to 15 "bad" minefields.

http://prntscr.com/1r8hd3

random world, turrets angle'd so they fire all enemies. cmd station build at the back near a fabricator.

http://prntscr.com/1r8hlq

cmd at the back next to adv factory, turrets in the middle.
http://prntscr.com/1r8hut

turrets middle, sniper back, cmd station next to starship const
http://prntscr.com/1r8i0m

system w/ colony and fabricator, decided to build at the fabricator.

one thing i agree with you is that the empire is disorganized, but really, what can you do. You need to advance somehow, and at some point you will thin out our systems, its just the question of which systems to pick. Here i picked basicly everything ASR and advanced construction, plus 1 armored and 1 botnet golem, of which i would never take a botnet again, because you cant power it without at least double zenith power.

I did check it out and what I suggested should work.

organized defenses and advancing.sav
A wave will hit LV-016 in 1 second.

odaa wave 2 + threat.sav
A wave and a fleet of threat ships will hit my homeworld (Thar-C-S1) in 1 second.

My turrets laugh at the AI ships while my entire fleet is on another side of the galaxy.

EDIT: Oh and I have an Assault Transport with engineers, colony ships and rebuilders sitting in Quebec Juliet.. a neutral planet between my homeworld and fleet. Assault Transports can get from Hipgnosis to Quebec Juliet.. regenerate health there.. and then get back home.
