Post Counts Are Now Visible Again
« on: August 26, 2009, 08:16:06 am »
In response to an issue raised on the AI War IRC Channel, post counts are now hidden on the posts themselves. You can still view your total number of posts on your profile page.

This is because some players were concerned that voicing their opinions might be inappropriate if their post count was relatively low.

Please note, all suggestions are considered equally, regardless of the forum member's seniority. Constructive criticism of the game is always appreciated.

Enjoy playing AI War!

Update: Post counts are now once again visible.

I never understood that, so long as a forum post is constructive it shouldn't matter if you're fresh a a daisy or an old cobweb riddled relic.

Agreed. I don't think it's been a problem on this community at all (people are typically pretty welcoming). I never was a fan of post counts on the side, though, because it seems to condone that sort of thing. The ranks are good enough, I think. :)

Ditto. Sometimes new user's opinions are even more valid than a veteran, simply because a veteran has been around a while and has certain preconceptions that a new poster won't.

You're absolutely correct. The change hasn't been made because the forum has any sort of elitist attitude, in fact it has an extremely welcoming atmosphere, it was made in the hope that new members, who have no experience of what the community here is like, will feel slightly less intimidated.

Good point. The game itself is intimidating enough as is :P

I'm a complete privacy nut (as probably people who have seen my other posts have noticed, which implies my post count is at least 2 now)... But I've never been concerned about this or the other common forum protocol showing "Registered July 2009" or whatever in the avatar section.

I have never read anything negative into few posts (being a mostly lurker myself) nor a recent registration date. In fact, it's just the opposite: I think this information is more helpful in being able to welcome people to the forums and to help new forum members understand our (largely unwritten) forum protocols and help them with the game (as often, new posters are also new to the game).

So, -1 on this idea from me... But whatever R & X want.

Never mind. I'm now +0 to +(some positive irrational number less than 1) for reasons I will withhold.

This is something I would like to remain visible, at least for admins (if it is hidden for everyone else, then I guess that is fine), because it really helps me gauge how new a player is when I don't recognize their handle too well.  Is this a player who has been here longer but is just coming back?  Is this the first or second post of the player?  And so on.

I don't base my decisions on what to include or whatever on this at all, but I do shift my tone slightly with this sort of thing -- and if someone has not posted for a while and comes back, that tends to flag me to go see what it was we were last talking about just to remind myself.

Maybe it's me, and yeah, I'm a new poster, but I still see the counts on every post in this thread.  Rev has 598 posts for example, and I have 1 (now).

It was set back. :) If it becomes an issue, we'll make it admin-only. Hopefully that won't become a problem in this community; I think we're all rather welcoming.

I would definitely agree, I haven't seen any developer forums with this level of interaction and encouragement.

Very impressed, both with the developers and with the game.  I'll be sticking around, and staying up way too late to take over just one more planet...
