I had 800 fleet ships there. Are you really suggesting 2 Laser Turrets would have made the difference?
Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you said a reinforcement wave had arrived, pierced your fleet ball, then a vampire had managed to pierce the line and destroy your command station. Because the only way a single vampire could have destroyed your command station was to have said station be undefended.
What it sounds like is that the enemy blob had a priority of attacking your command center with only a secondary concern on your fleet. A single mk III vampire, on low caps, would take 7 swipes to kill a mk I econ station. To have a command station be popped like that is annoying, but that is the risk of having an econ station on the front lines of a newly claimed planet. They provide huge resources and also energy; To have economic stations be tough would make them broke.
But to compare: It would take a single shredder 8 hits, but there would twice as many of them and they would reproduce. It would take a cutless 12 hits, but there would be 4 times as many.
What I am getting at is that any station not an military station is at risk to any ship that can infiltrate shields, especially melee ships. But to counter these you have military stations. If you want to put economic stations on the front lines that is fine, but especially when newly reclaimed expect loses. The fact that a vampire does it was chance: Any other shield piercing can do the same.
