Poll

So, do we want to have one prerelease thread per major release (1.005, 1.006, etc)?

Yes, it's hard to keep track of multiple threads right now.

No, each prerelease has it's own conversation.  It's good as-is.
6 (66.7%)
Do whatever, but have a separate forum for prereleases.

I don't care one way or another.

Poll: Prerelease threads: combined or separate?
« on: June 09, 2009, 02:26:59 pm »
T-Bone Biggins brought up a great question.  I know how I feel, but I want to make this friendly for everyone.  So, if you're into the prereleases, let us know what you think!

From T-Bone:

Quote
The post would look like:

Blahblahblah text

Pre-Release 1.xxxA [link here]
Pre-Release 1.xxxB [link here]
Pre-Release 1.xxxC [link here]
Pre-Release 1.xxxD [link here]

1.xxxA: blahblahblah text on revisions

1.xxxB: blahblahblah text on revisions

And so on.

I think there are good points on both sides, which is why I'm putting the question to the community.

I voted for the first option : only one thread.

Also, it would be great to have one single post, somewhere, that would present all the changelog info for the same prerelease series (such as the 1.005 series). As it is now, we have to run around in many different threads & posts to keep up with all the changelog details.

What I did is that I copied in my WordPad the changelogs for 1.005B (3 June) to 1.005K (9 June), so I have all the info on one single page (of a .rtf document).

(Where's the changelog for 1.005A? I didn't see it.)

Thanks for all the awesome work on all those very regular updates!

The actual changelog files in the prereleases themselves are cumulative -- so the changelog file for 1.005K includes everything up to and including 1.005K from the 1.005 series.  I've been just including the diffs from each changelog in the actual posts on the forum about that, to make it easier for people who are following along.  I can post the full changelog as an attachment or something, though, if people want to see that.

(Where's the changelog for 1.005A? I didn't see it.)

There are only changelog versions for those that you actually install, since they are all cumulative.  Players who just get the full releases (and skip prereleases) will see just a 1.005 changelog file that has everything.

Thanks for all the awesome work on all those very regular updates!

You bet!

Yes, please do that if you have the time ... because if a series of beta updates has many gradual phases (for example, 1.005A to 1.005K), it would be interesting to see on one single page all the changes that have been made from the very beginning of the series.

(I was aware that update 1.005K included all the previous changes in the series, since 1.005A ... but I was referring to a single text (log) that would show all changes since the beginning of the series.) Thanks.

Okay, I'll start doing that from now on. :)

I'm not sure I'm quite following -- do you mean all of the changes since the game started, or since 1.005 started?  The latter is already what it does, and the former would be pretty unwieldy (100+ pages) unless I just went back to release 1.001 or something.

Since 1.005 started. I was just stressing the point that a "changelog" is a text, so even though I was aware that 1.005K included every game-code modifications since 1.005A, the log text of 1.005K only showed the modifications for 1.005K. My point being that in a pre-release series for a patch (series 1.005, for example), it would be interesting to get a cumulative changelog text for the current series (for example : to see all the progress since 1.004 -- without having to run around in different threads & posts). The last statement, in my previous post, seems to have introduced an ambiguous confusion : sorry.

(I updated to 1.005, on Impulse, this 11 June morning. The process stated that it was extracting 556 files, for a 2.04 MB patch.)

I gotcha -- thanks.  I'll start having cumulative notes in addition to the briefer change notes in there.

As for the number of files with each Impulse update, I have no idea what they are doing with that.  There were less than 50 files updated, and their filesize is correct, so they must just be splitting them into smaller downloadable chunks that they later recombine, etc.  It's an easy way to make a progress bar work, and/or to support download resumption.
