Give them damage reflection (like Z Mirror) for giggles.

No, that'd be a new unit.  The Mirror Field.

So I walked really late into this, but what if...

Hardened forcefields provide partial plasma protection? It could scale with mark so that mk III provides strong protection, but not 100% either.
Life is short. Have fun.

I'd be ok with hardened providing, say, 25%/50%/75% reduction in plasma splash-through.

It'll be something of a pain to code (right now the units have to remember "ff protecting me" and "firepower-reducing ff protecting me", with this they'd also have to remember "hardened ff protecting me", and actually remember the highest mark of said), but it sounds reasonable.

How about 20% per mark?

That way Mk4 and Mk5 HFFs can still exist in theory without having weird values.

It does leave the problem of HFFs not have enough armor to get their full main benefit vs. plasma seige shots though.  500,000 armor vs. 800,000*mk damage is pretty much inconsequential.

I.e. it will provide less protection than a regular FF, despite the reduction in splash damage.

Increasing their armor to 999999 would help too.

1m armor vs. 1.9m damage...only cuts it in half. ;)

But yes.  More armor would be good too.

Id probably say go with like 600k*mk. With the current hp numbers, that would make it's effective hp against plasma siege the same as a normal ff (plasma siege of the same mk), and as I demonstrated it would reduce the bleedthrough damage by virtue of simply having armor.

As for protecting stuff in conjunction with other forcefields, is probably say hardened forcefields should just have about 50 foldout 'ablative armor' mods  ;D

Seriously though, what are some thoughts on changing the way hardened forcefields are unlocked? For the moment they are a separate tree with greater cost.. Could we possibly make them 'candy tech', but also require the normal forcefield of the same mk to be unlocked?
Code: [Select]
[FF3]+500k->[HFF3] (requires hff2)
  ^          ^
  |          |
[FF2]+500k->[HFF2] (requires hff1)
  ^          ^
  |          |
[FF1]+500k->[HFF1]

Woa, late to the discussion, so I will just give bullet point type things here.

- Plasma seige starships getting some sort of nerf to their shield penetration effect seems reasonable, though I don't think it should be a heavy nerf. Speaking of PSSs, did you say, Keith, that you would of reduced the engine damage it inflicted when you made it AOE and including fleet ships if you realized how high the engine damage was? Any chance of getting an engine damage nerf of ships hit by the AOE part?
- Armored forcefields getting partial resistance to PSS shield "splash penetration" seems like a reasonable buff, although I agree that there should be none that provide total immunity. Also, a bit of armor buff would be nice. EDIT: Also, they should be allowed to keep their ability to be armor boosted. This is one of the few ways that armor boosters can currently be actually useful on the defense.
- IMO, flak turrets are very nearly there in terms of finding a good spot balance wise. Their cap HP is already ridiculously high, so perhaps an increase in armor (== lightning turret armor seems about right) and maybe a slight increase to the number of things it can hit per shot, so it's effects can be a bit more visible before it likely eats some of the first damage of incoming enemies (especially if stationed around wormholes)

Yeah, I keep getting small  blobs of engine-ruined ships from PSS aoe (no FF involved)

I left that option available--and relegated to the Mk5--so the AI can throw a middle finger at the player iff it ever gets its claws on one. :D
