Is there any way to insert a list of my own planet names for the game to use?

No offense X, but I don't like the planet names much. They don't stick in my head.

Simply put your names in altpanetnames.txt in the AI War main folder. They will not show up in the lobby, but will be used once the game started.

There are some custom lists available in the forums, too. Just search for planet names.

Also, for existing games, you can use the "Notes" feature to rename planets individually. It's the little notepad icon on the left sidebar.

In addition to that, you can get some nice lists from http://arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,1577.0.html and from searching altplanetnames or planet names and looking for altplanetnames.txt files.

Perhaps we need a sticky somewhere with a list of all the lists that have been generated.  They are a bit hard to find these days.

This thread inspired me to make a list of planet names from Elite Galaxy 1 that could be added to an altplanetnames.txt
I find them easy to pronounce and remember, and there is something about the feeling of liberating a familiar galaxy from the AI.
Note, due to the catastrophic damage to the witch-space matrix during the first AI War, travel between systems may only be accomplished by using the rents, or 'wormholes' left behind, thus it is unlikely that any old traders navigational maps that were based on the physical proximity of stars will be useful.

A bit off topic, but when I played coop with my friend I was frequently annoyed by hard to pronounce planet names.

Sample conversation:
"GO TO QUOG... Go to QUOGHZ. Nevermind just go to the planet that starts with Q and ends with XZ and is next to my planet that starts with ZH and ends with XZ"

You can rename planets by using the notes feature in the galaxy map.

And you get good at pronouncing random syllables after a while.

Or perhaps put a page on the Wiki that links to them. Also, that way lists could be added that aren't attached to a forum post.
